I agree with the above comments, as many facors contribute:
Cost of living in your area
Level of education
Minimum wage in your area
Income level of the practice
I live in a big city in a state with a higher minimum wage than most. An entry level assistant with at least some Community College education can make $14 and up. An experienced assistant with training in specialties (such as orthodontics or oral surgery) can make up to $30 per hour + bonus and benefits.
Advantages of dental assisting over other positions requiring less than a 4 year degree - opportunity for advancement, medical and dental benefits (most dentists will do your dental work for free or lab-costs only), clean and pleasant work environment, job stability, good hours (usually no nights or weekends).
If a dental assistant is willing to work hard, show up every day, take on additional responsibilities, continue their education - they can make a better than average living.
