New Orleans is great.. the only people it affected were the locals.. not tourists. i'm 30min north of Nola.. and I go every weekend for entertainment .. theres endless things to do there. The French Quarter was practically untouched by the Hurricane .. and 90% of the tourists areas.. or the areas that you should visit is up and running again.
http://neworleans.com/ is a cool site where you can look up current activities.. and great tours .. check out "101 cool things" "See and Do" and "tours and attractions"

We were hit by a devastating hurricane. Of course we still have big problems. But the quarter, downtown, and uptown areas are fine. The only thing different about those parts of town is the amount of Mexicans on street corners waiting for work. Now is the time to come visit our city. We need tourists more than ever. Go take a drive through the 9th ward. See it for yourself. New Orleans is an unforgettable city for many reasons.

We were there in December and again in March. The difference between the two visits was amazing. There were huge improvements with more businesses open and more people returning home.
The French Quarter is up and running with most of the businesses reopened. Some businesses are not back to pre-storm hours.
We are going back in December and are counting down the days.

I am glad you are going down. They need more people to bring the city back.
I am from New Orleans. While I live in CA there, mom and family still lives there. She said it is still not 100% but it is getting better!
Here is a website to check out if you want to see some footage of NO.

My husband and I went this past summer. Everything was fine. When we went the service in the restaurants was slow because they needed help bad(needed employees). Please be patient with them and remember what they have been through. Do lots of shopping. I have heard that the people who are back or there have said that the tourists have been coming and shopping but ignoring the devastation areas. There is some kind of tour that you can take to check this out. You will have a great time!

I think the French Quarter is 'back to normal'...don't know about the other parts, though. Sorry.
