I just got a westie puppy. He poops a whole lot. I am not sure why, but read from the website below. It has a great time schedule for when they will often want to go to the bathroom. Crate train him, that has been working very well for us. Walk him a lot. They are small dogs so they have a small digestive system. Hope this helps a little, not sure what else to say.

Westies are very energetic and nervous, which means their digestive system works very fast! You don't say how old he is, but the minute he eats or drinks, get him outside or on the newspaper! Take him outside with you whenever you can, and give the command, "Hurry up." He will soon associate this with doing his business.
If your dog is a grown male, he may be marking territory with his excrement. Westies are VERY possessive and territorial; this can be boundary marking, or indeed punishment if he feels he's angry with you for leaving him alone all day, etc.
If he's still a pup, other than when he eats, he should be put outside or on the paper, at least every couple of hours, just to be safe. And at night he should have the newspaper within easy reach of his sleeping place. There are sprays you can buy to encourage him to do it there, just as there are repellent sprays to keep him off the furniture etc.

Because he spends ages outside just mucking about and doesn't need to go, then you call him in. And shortly after he needs to go. Answer is, don't just let the dog out. Go out with him and train him to go on command. Once he has learned, all you have to do it say the word and he will know what he should be doing.
I'm amazed people are stil advising to poke a dogs nose into it's poo or smack them on the nose given that there are hundreds of good training books about which say you should NEVER smack a dog on the nose or rub it's nose in it. I guess brute force and ignorance training methods are still being used in some backwards parts of the world where the population is largely inbred and illiterate.

How long after taking him out is he going? The problem allot of times is that he is not getting enough time outside to finish his business. The best way to break this bad habit is to be more patient than the dog. You stand outside with him and he doesn't come back in until he has gone. If he refuses, you take him inside, crate him for 20 minutes, let him back outside. If he goes, great, if not he goes back into the crate for 20 minutes. You repeat this process until he gets the clue. With a Westie, it could take a bit of time as they are terriers who are tenacious and like to get their way.

Do you walk the dog or let it run free? If you walk it maybe you should take the time and take it for a longer walk...if it runs free let it stay out longer. it also depends how much you feed it and what kind of food it gets if it is on a high fiber diet then it need to go more often. I suggest you feed it in the afternoon and make sure it spend adequate time out side or on the leash the longer they walk the more time they have to digest

Could be a way of marking territory. Tell him off and drag him outside. Get a book on training dogs!

You're probably not keeping it out long enough. Make sure you stay with it until it defacates, then once it does, reward it. It may start speeding up it's time so it can get the treat!

I watch my dogs and make sure that they go. They don't come back into the house until they have finished their business!
