Take a cool shower to remove some of the heat from the affected area.
Then apply an aloe vera based aftersun (the best ones have aloe vera as the first ingredient). Cover up until the redness has gone. Sunburn on top of sunburn is not good!

I took a cruise to Jamaica and got a third degree sun burn. It was extremely painful and I looked like I was literally burned in a fire. The cruise ship doctor came to my room and all he had with him was paper towels and vinegar. I thought oh great the doc is drunk!! But when he applied the paper towel soaked in vinegar to the burn I felt instant relief. The trick is to remove the paper towel and cool it back off in the bowl of vinegar as soon as it gets hot. You keep repeating this process until the skin is cool to the touch. It takes all of the heat out of the burn, which is important because people don't realize that once they are burned the skin continues to burn until all of the fever is out. I had no more pain and no scarring after wards. It was a miracle.

Definitely pure Aloe Vera gel, if you can get hold of a plant and use the sap directly that's the best, if not you can buy it from the pharmacy. Most of the After-Sun creams are exactly the same as your normal moisturiser.

i burnt myself so bad one year - it took over a year for the lines to go away...USE ALOE!!!!!
There is one aloe vera - put out by Hawaiian Tropic -it's AWESOME....it's called Cool Aloe I.C.E. Lidocaine Burn Relief Gel...it's mostly Aloe but then has a bunch of good stuff to make you stop hurting faster.
Best of luck!

Use aftersun with Aloe Vera in as others have suggested put it in the fridge for a bit first and will be lovely and cold when you put it on.

Don't laugh.
I got sun burnt in Greece whilst in Zante and the locals there told us to use natural yogurt. Just cover yourself in it.
Shower off several hours later. We got a big paint tub size.
I stayed in for a couple of days because of it.

Cool the burn with a wet cloth over the area, change frequently.
Invest in some sun block, too many incidents of sun burn will give you cancer!
