The most senior officer in the British Army was asked for his assesment of the situation in Iraq. He told it as he saw it and as many senior American officials, military and civil, also see it(but their views are often supressed). Iraq _is_ a bloody and disastrous mess. Indeed, recently, a senior US general said much the same thing as the Brit, when he stated that US army ops in Iraq were now more about protecting themselves than bothering about the insurgents.
It should be noted that the British general was not speaking on behalf of the British government - the latter says the Brits will stay.
As far as I am aware (and I read a few US and UK newspapers every day) there is no 'big deal' about it (Sammy please note). But some parts of the media will always try to make it so. You'd do well to remember that British government was the first to support the USA's decision to invade Iraq, and its armed forces have played their role well. In proporion to their numbers the British forces have suffered the same casualty figures as the US forces, and they have always been willing to take on any duties asked.
So, to any Americans who feel peeved in any way, don't knock you closest and most loyal ally. You might not need the UK's military power very often, but you certainly need the backing of the UK when it comes to credibility of actions, and diplomatic and political clout.

No. That will only happen when Iraqs police and security services are fully trained, and able to deal with the situation themselves. Tony Blair has made it quite clear, now is not the right time, although the situation may change as/when he leaves office.

It sure looks like it. If Tony Blair goes.......their troops won't be far behind. I think the "Bush Bunch" is trying to patch that leak. You'll probably see Condi.......or someone else.....Powell could go, to try and do some butt kissing, major.......major smooching. It's public sentiment, they want their boys home. The Brits know how to push their leaders buttons, more power to them.Good question....HAVE A GOOD ONE!!!!!.....later
