Good for you!
I know that sand is common, along with marbles and pebbles. You could try that by going to a gardening store.
My mother went to a wedding where they had balloons sitting in the center of the table as a centerpiece and the weights were filled with candies that matched the colors of the wedding. It was the cutest idea and everyone took home a weighted balloon with the candy inside.
If you're thinking you like the candy idea, the company that makes M&Ms can customize m&ms to read a message and to have specific colors on them to match your event. They're a little expensive though.
Good Luck!

I know the original post is from 2006, but I am planning my own wedding for the summer of 2015, and my partner and I were talking about what to use as inexpensive weights for balloons. We are having a candy buffet table and will use lots of balloon bouquets as the backdrop. We were thinking we could use cans of soup wrapped in colorful plastic or foil would work, and be very inexpensive. What was even better though, and virtually free, is using river rocks or smooth stones wrapped in plastic or foil. We only need a stone or two for each bouquet if the weight is a pound or so. Enough to keep the balloons from floating away. So, we will be using the smooth stones as it is the least expensive way to go, and we are paying for the wedding ourself, without aid from parents and such.

There are a couple of ways to handle the seating arrangements. Having people sit at tables during the ceremony is fine, people can turn their chairs around watch the ceremony, but you may want to consider putting a row of chairs for your parents and other close relatives or you can do rows of chairs and have the tables set, moved out to the perimeter, and ready to place after the ceremony is over, if there is enough room at your venue. The head table placement is really up to the space that you have. As far as live fish are concerned, not necessarily the best idea. I've had people use them for a couple types of events and it just wasn't pretty. One used Japanese Fighting Fish, which, after a few "beverages" people started putting together in bowls and letting them fight. Others have used goldfish and believe me, if they die, it doesn't create the classy, romantic atmosphere you may be going for for your wedding celebration. I, personally, am not a big fan of balloons at weddings, either (think birthdays or prom!) however, if that's really what you want, balloon bouquets around the area are probably more effective and nicer than using balloons on the tables. Good Luck and Congratulations!

I know Tescos have there own ballon weights and there about £2 each and they look really nice.If you have a store in where you life that does occasions like partys then go and have a word with them and shop around for prices. By the time you make your own you could probabley of bought some nicer ones ans it will save you the hassel of makin them.

Big shells are nice, and if you live by or near the sea they are free. You can also use pebbles/stones and spray paint them a colour that matches your theme.
Alternatively attach them to your flower displays in the centre of the table (if you are having them) or around an empty wine bottle with a candle or some flowers in it (be careful about lighting the candle though if the balloons are on ribbon).
Small organza bags are really cheap and you can fill them with anything, sand or pebbles.
I have also seen people part fill one balloon with water and use that as a weight for the display?

You can use pretty much anything as a weight for your balloons. Grab some pretty colored metallic paper and some ribbons or string of some sort.
cut the paper into 6x6 or 8x8 squares (depending on the amount of balloons you will use).
Fill them up with sand, dry beans, pennies, rocks, marbles, or anything else that is heavy and then tie them off with the string.
I have always used dry beans as my balloon weights. Good luck and great idea!!

Sand it is inexpensive... 50# bag for $3.00 use about 1/4 of a cup of sand in each weight. You can pick it up at any Walmart. Use colored see through wrapping paper or Mylar foiled paper from the dollar store you can get it in your wedding colors and tie the weights closed with ribbon. My sister owns a floral, balloons and gift shop and that is what they use.

Pebbles in a net bag. Cut a circle out of a nice fabric or net, put a pile of pebbles in the middle and then tie it up with a matching ribbon.
Or, if you're feeling really nice to your guests, sweets would be really nice instead of the pebbles. Then they can tuck in after dinner and let the balloons float off romantically....
We had these at our office party, but be careful what shape the balloons are - we did 'balloon sculptures' with ours and that might lower the tone of the do (depends if your guests are as low as us, of course).
Have a wonderful day. It makes it really special making things yourself because it gives the day a personal touch and you lots of funny memories.

you could use that pretty colored foil filled with hershey kisses, they could also be used as wedding favors for the children that will be there, almost all kids can have the hershey kisses and the balloons with keep them occupied at the reception. Or you could use colored rocks they are available in many shapes, sizes and colors, or sand, you can get that in many colors to. Usually the colored sand is more expensive than the normal sand. Or you could use potting soil. There are so many options to choose from. Good luck and I hope that i have helped in some way!
