When you close are the changes you made still there, if so look at this:
You may have "Auto Save" set - it should be under "Tools"

It should do if you click file/close. If it does not is sound like your version of excel may be corrupted

Do you have AntiVirus installed and running?
I am afraid you have one of those old viruses in that Excel.
Do not panic, I can remove it for you.
