Hi! I'm Laura fom Italy!
Rent a car is not very easy in Italy, planes are not very cheap... I suggest you the trains! The official site of italian trains is: www.trenitalia.com
Ciao! :-)

When you add in all the taxes, airport transfers, etc. it costs about the same amount to fly on Ryanair as it does to take an overnight train. The advantage to the overnight train is that you don't have to pay for a hotel that night, and you arrive fresh and ready to explore the city (not exhausted because your flight was at 5:30 am from a secondary airport three hours away from the city center). Every night a train leaves Milan, stops in Turin and then continues on to Barcelona (stopping only at the French border for police checks). The same train runs in the other direction nightly as well. This is called a "Trenhotel" and you need to book a few weeks in advance. You can book a private room or just a bed in a shared compartment (mixed-gender or female-only). I've both flown and trained in both directions (Turin to Barcelona) and found the train is easier. One of the great things about the train is that the start and finish points are right in the city center. For example, Ryanair flies to GIRONA, which is more than an hour outside of Barcelona by infrequent bus.

Ryan Air seats do not really cost 1 euro since there are taxes to pay and, as of November 1st, a fee for every checked bag. It depends how far in advance you can book. I booked a flight from Rome to Barcelona a month out, including insurance, and a checked bag, for a total under 50 euros. Shop around.

Barcelona has thousands of boats and fishing vessels. Go to the port and ask around. Genoa and Sardinia are a very short trip and you may be able to find someone to give you a lift for a nominal fee or maybe even for free. Sorry, I got that backwards. But it does work both ways.

i went from florence to barcelona on Ryan Air for about 80 euros round trip. Ryan Air is considered THE cheapest airline ever, seriously not kidding. you can even fly at costs of about 2.99 euros one way, im not lyeing to you. go check out their prices and dates.

however ryan air only parts form rome, (i live in florence) so i had to take the trian there early...which on my trip..i missed my flight., yes, not kidding. so i had to take the next one to valencia and from there find my own way (i was with my bf) to get to barcelona. we ended up renting a car and drove form valencia to barcelona, long ride. and our so-called-spain trip was only to be a 3 day trip.

anyways, by train, you waste money and you loose a lot of your time, go for ryan air, the cheapest way to get to spain from italy.

My roommate just bought a ticket to Barcelona from Pisa on Ryan Air. I think she got a pretty good deal.

I would suppose Ryanair is fastest and chapest but by travelling by train you don't risking to get stuck at an airfield..
