She also suffers from liver dysfunction, and was put under total anesthesia 3 weeks ago in order to remove some superficial tumors from her ears. A couple of days ago she vomited and had diarrhea, and since then she walks around the house senseless and disorientated- she often stops at corners without knowning where to go, or walks in circles- and cannot rest. She recognises us but we cannot confort her. She has lost her appetite and does not drink water. The vet could not give a diagnosis and mentioned the possibility of a stroke. Does anyone out there has any idea of what this may mean? Despite her age she has been a very lively dog (people would not believe that she is past 16yrs old...)

I was just going to write "old age" (16 is pretty old for a dog!). Liver dysfunction is NEVER a good sign. Even humans w/that are often written off as "terminal" (liver transplants have a mixed rate of success, and even if you DO have enough $ to get one for your dog, there is the bare fact of his age and other problems).

The site below (about.com) recommends a new drug for dogs w/"Alzheimer's" (confusion, etc.).

I was going to look into this some more, but let's get real: as much as you love your dog, they DO have natural life spans and yours has had a "good innings" as Brits say! It may be time to stop throwing money away, stop pretending she's not suffering and just let her go.

I have a beloved, 14-year-old Husky, with end-stage liver disease, so I'm not being cavalier about this. I KNOW how hard it will be to say good-bye!

Best of luck to you!

My 13 year old Maltese had the exact same problem and it turned out her blood sugar was really low and she had developed diabetes.

From the vet's office we had to have her hopitalized for 48 hours to get things up to normal.

After that she still didn't eat, we had to change her diet to fresh white rice (cooked) and some special canned dog food (sorry i don't remember the name). We had to warm her food & supervise her feedings to be sure she ate.

Unfortunately, she began to lose control of her bladder about 6 months after all of this started & the vet said there was nothing else we could do to help her.....

I am sorry this sounds so grim, your pup may have a totally different problem???

the disorentation & walking in circles sounds like Parvo. i had a dog get parvo & that is how he was acting but he would not eat or drink either & had blood in his stool if you do not see any of these other symptoms it may have to do with the age & some of his/her inner organs. either way it sounds serious i would get to the vet right away if it is Parvo you have to get it taken care of quick because it is very hard on a dog & usually kills especially in an older dog. i am not trying to scare just being honest this is not something you want to put off

It sounds to me like your dog has an ear problem. Take her for a second opinion. This could be vestibular disease which is an ear disorder that is very treatable.

OLD AGE? In my opinion its senility. A dog that old needs to be made comfortable until the time comes to put her down. Eventually it will come to that. Love them dogs.

Take her back to the vet again and see if he can reccomend you to a specialist. This can be something serious.
