I have a dog and a cat and a kid! When discussing the various problems encountered raising each, people often say I'm "too lenient" w/my child, since I don't use physical punishment (and never will!)...whereas they go into fits if they hear of a dog or other animal being abused. I agree the latter is horrible, but do you think they see kids as less deserving of kindness and equal protection under the law? It sickens me!

OH...CRAP! Looks like I've got all the animal-rights activists on board, but NONE of the CHILDREN'S RIGHTS ones! How can you people go on and on about animals (which I get) yet say almost NOTHING about how horribly kids are treated in this society??!
And, whoever said spanking is okay has his head firmly up is a**! SPANKING hurts! Would you spank a DOG? I thought not!

I agree w/the person who pointed out that animals can't speak: but they can whimper and cower! You forget that kids, being smarter, will often say NOTHING for fear of a worse beating! Child abusers should be publicly flogged and then sterilized!

I think Animal lovers do care if children are being abused. After all neither a child or an animal can speak for themselves nor defend themselves.

It is funny, because I have often compared raising a dog and a small child as being very similar. And just like there are different philosophies for raising a kid, there are these same differences on a pet. I do not think anyone would advocate abusing a pet or a child, that is obviously wrong. The distinction becomes what is abuse and what is just punishment. I do not think a dog has more rights than a child, but then again a dog tell a teacher it is getting hit either. My philosophy is that a spanking is not a bad punishment, but never do it in anger and keep it to a spanking. If people think this is abuse so be it... But you should not do to one what you would not do to another. Raising a kid and a pet are really very similar processes...

I realize what you are saying, however you have to realize that at least kids can speak. Dogs and animals can't and because of that they tend to be abused many times more than children. I've seen dogs and cats butchered, cut to pieces while still alive. I've seen cats strangled to death with their own entrails, watched dogs get shot, burned, mutilated, and that's just a PG rated description. How can people DO this? On the other hand the worse (and yes it's horrible) I've seen done to children would be child porn or the starvation that happens most often in third world countries. I don't find this any less revolting than the SAME done to an animal but I think that dogs (and cats) have gotten screwed when it comes to cruelty. If someone beats a child, that child can tell a teacher. If they are hungry, they can ask for help. If someone beats a dog, starves it, tears its skin off, or lights it on fire, no one will ever know as long as it's kept in the backyard. This world is a sick horrible place and I’m very tired of living here.

I feel we need stronger laws for animals. If you compare the punishment for killing an animal the penalty is usually a fine of $500.00-$1000 AND A WARNING.Kill a child you can get life in prison.Animals deserve to be protected better since serial killers start killing animals and move on to bigger prey such as your children.Up the penalty for animal cruelty and put the bastards away before they get a chance to go after your children. No I do not think animals have better laws for their safety.PS.If you choose not to spank your children then that is your choice, but spanking an animal should be a no no also.Animals can be trained with positive reinforcement.Think about the fact that you can explain to Junior why the spanking and animals cannot understand even the word sorry.Do not hit your animals, guide them through training, there is no excuse to give priority to the two legged children over the four-legged creatures. Both deserve your time and patience.God Bless!

Physical abuse of animals and kids is wrong and you can get in trouble with the law for doing both. Personally, I think it is about time that animals are starting to get the same protection from violence and abuse that kids get. Go animal cops!

Me personally, I prefer animals over kids. My husband and I don't want kids-our animals are our babies. But animals and kids are different. They both have feelings and souls and neither of the two should EVER be abused. They both have rights and should be disciplined, not abused, if necessary.

I fully believe that animals have the same rights as people. They should never be abused or abandoned, and should be loved just as much as the rest of the family!

I say they are equal. when we had our dog he got whippings just like me if he did something wrong. and i noticed the difference with a dog that received physical punishment that one who doesn't. because my dog got whippings just like me he was more disciplined and acted out less and he obeyed commands more.
