Ja, ek kan Afrikaans praat. Dis my moedertaal. As jy smaak om Afrikaans te praat, sal jy liewer ander Suid Afrikaners moet e-pos. Baie mense hier raak kwaad as mens in Afrikaans antwoord.

If you wanna join our group, check out the South African section under "Travel". There are lots of good friends of mine there and we have formed a good bond over the past few months. We have vowed not to answer or ask in Afrikaans, but we'll make an exception for you! And you can e-mail almost anyone there. They are all good guys. We fight and laugh and generally just enjoy being South African,

First I want to correct Ana-Lisa. Afrikaans is simplified archaic Dutch. There are English loan words, but it is definitely not a mix of Dutch and English.
About your question. I can understand Afrikaans well and during my recent trip to South Africa I found out that Afrikaans speakers understand me well when I speak Dutch.

Hi. I'm fluent in Afrikaans, as in South African schools you are required to take a second South African language. There are some words if you are interested:

Goeie more - good morning
Hoe gaan dit? - How are you?
Lekker! (En jy?) - Great! (And you?) (informal)
My naam is ___ - My name is___
Ek is lief vir jou - I love you
Wat maak jy? - What are you doing?
Waar gaan jy? - Where are you going?
Ek gaan na die winkels toe - I'm going to the shops

It is important to note that there are two forms of You, "jy" and "u"{prounced - eeh}.
Jy is an informal form of address, and "u" is the formal version.

(note, when there is a G at the begining of the word, it is pronounced almost like a Spanish J as in Julio, and a W is pronounced like an English V.)

By the way, Afrikaans is just one of the 11 official languages of South Africa, the others are English, Ndebele, Nothern Sotho, Xhosa, Venda, Tswana, Southern Sotho, Zulu, Swazi, and Tsonga.
If you need any more help don't hesitate to contact me! Thanks!
