I saw Rent in New York and it was the worst play I had ever attended. The only good seat is outside of the theater.

I have sat in the orchestra and the balcony. Both are good. If you want to see the actor's expressions then of course choose the orchestra.
My feeling for Rent is not where the seats are, but who is sitting around you. If you have a great group of people around you, the last row can be awesome.
The front row can be bad if you have boring people around you - especially during 'Seasons of Love' and 'Over the Moon.'

Enjoy the show!!!

The same for ANY broadway show. On the floor, center section, 10-20 rows back from the stage. Any further forward and the makeup looks unnatural. Any further back and it gets harder to see things. The music also blends better the further back you are.
