When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, why did God lie about what the
outcome would be (Genesis 2:17),9 while the serpent told the truth (Genesis

God did not lie for that is impossible for him to do--"That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us." Hebrews 6:18
God told Adam and Eve that they would positively die for their disobedience and they did die. They returned to the dust from where they came. Satan, speaking through the serpent, said that they would not die. Satan lied. God also said that in the day they rebelled against him, they would die. Since a day to God is as a thousand years, that would be the truth. Adam & Eve died in what God considers a day--"But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." 2 Peter 3:8

God didnt lie, Man did die Spiritually and physically,, Adam and Eve were created with Immortal Bodies, never aging, when they disogeyed , they began to age and then die

v.1 The word serpent here is not the Hebrew word commonly used for snake. It could be translated dragon, especially since snakes are reptiles, not "beasts of the field".

v.5 Satan implies that God is not fair in withholding the knowledge of good and evil.

v.6 Eve was deceived by the serpent, but Adam willfully transgressed when he ate the fruit. She was led into sin by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life.

v.9 "Where art thou?" is the cry of a heart-broken father. God knew that Adam and Eve were the victims of their choice and that they were now in bondage to death and darkness.

v.12-13 Adam and Eve tried to shift the blame for their sin onto others.

v.15 The first promise of the Messiah: Jesus, the seed of the woman (Mary), destroyed the "head" or authority and power of Satan by His redemptive death on the cross. The cross is the second tree established by God whereby men might leave the government of death and darkness and go back into the government of life and light.

v.21 The concept of a blood sacrifice to cover sin is first introduced here as the animals are slain to provide clothing for Adam and Eve. This event foreshadows Christ's eventual death on the cross, which put an end to blood sacrifice.

v.22-24 God was merciful, not harsh, when He sent Adam and Eve away from the tree of life, because He knew they would not want to have to remain forever in their earthly, aging bodies.

What are you a Muslim or an atheist? We Christians are not stupid enough to go for your trick question. God IS Truth, therefore cannot lie. The serpent IS the father of lies, therefore will not tell the truth if it suits his evil agenda. God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden because they listened to the serpent's lie and disobeyed God. The outcome was that they would struggle on earth and suffer mortality, be punished for their sinfulness and bear children in pain until God would send His Messiah to save His people from their sins. That Messiah did come to us 2000 years ago in the form of Jesus Christ the true son of God who came to suffer and die by the hand of sin so that we would all be saved, and the gates of heaven would be opened to those who believe. God also promised in the garden that He would put enmity between the serpent(Satan) and Mary, ( the Mother of Jesus) who consented to bring the Savior into the world in her womb; and ,he(serpent) wold bite at her heel and she(Mary) would crush his head. Now, at the end, Satan is working harder than ever before to deceive and ruin as many souls as possible to take them away from God so that when God finally wins the battle and has Michael the Archangel push Satan back down into the bowels of Hell and lock it up for 1000 years, Satan will have ensnared a lot of God's children who would be lost forever.. What side are you on?

I suppose you refer to God's pronouncement that "in the day" Adam and/or Eve should eat of the fruit, they will die. Since neither died that day, you suggest God lied.

This is one of many instances in the Bible where it helps to either know Hebrew, or have access to a good Hebrew Lexicon. The Hebrew word translated into English as "day" is "yowm," which MAY mean day, but may also mean a general temporal reference to time, or even a lifetime. For example, the Day of the Lord lasts much more than a day.

Carefully considered, God should be understood to have told Adam that he and Eve would die at some point in time if they ate the fruit. The fact that we all die (with the exception of folks like Enoch and Elijah) confirms God did not lie.

Peace.

God does nothing but tell the truth.
Mortality was not part of creation, so death came because of Adam & Eve's disobedience. (Mortality, and spiritual death also)

Satan is a masterful liar. He bends the truth to make it look desireable. But you are correct, Adam and Eve did not immediately die, and took on a Godly trait after eating the forbidden fruit; they knew good from evil, essentially fulfilling the serpent's statement to Eve, "You will be as gods".

God did not lie about the outcome, Adam and Eve did die within a day. The Bible says that a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day to God (II Peter 3:8) and so Adam and Eve died before they reached a thousand years old or one day. Eve died before 1000 yrs old and Adam died at 930 (Genesis 5:5) - they died before they reached a day. Plus, they died spiritual right on the spot. So God never lies only we as men do. (Numbers 23:19)...This was a very good question.

Dear Omar,

I've been speed reading through the answers to see if there was anything for me to add or clarify. I think you should easily have gotten the point that God does NOT lie ever and Satan does NOT tell the truth ever.

It looks like there are at least 10 good answers here - Suzanne, Lover of Truth, Seraphim and I forgot the other names. Instead of adding another answer I'm just going back to give several thumbs up.

God told the truth.

Before the fall, Adam and Eve did not know good and evil. They did not know what sin was. All they knew was God and His love.

After the fall, their eyes were opened. They understood what sin was. Not only that, but they were changed from being perfect, sinless people to being imperfect sinners.

Had Adam and Eve not eaten from that tree, they would not have died (Genesis 3:22b). They would have eaten from the tree of life and lived forever. Adam and Eve are dead. They died like God said they would. The serpent told them that they would not die. He lied.

Man did die. Spiritually, mankind died right then and there, but through God's mercy, physically a while later. Satan, however, told a half-truth, and deceived Eve. Their eyes were indeed opened, and they knew good and evil. But the lie was that they would not die, and they would be like God.

The only way Adam and Eve were like God is that now they know that "good" is defined as "following God's laws" and "evil" is defined as "breaking God's laws". They did not become immortal, they were unable to do miracles, and they were driven from their home, away from their source of eternal life : God, and the Tree of Life.

They were worse off than they were before... because now they would get sick, and eventually die, and they were now seperated from God. All for the sake of wanting to know what "evil" was. Welp, they got it. Evil is rebellion against God.

Adam & Eve died a spiritual death. And, since sin cannot be in God's presence, He kicked them out of the Garden.
Similar to if a parent warns their child not to do something, yet the child does it anyway.
The good parent will admonish the child, and demonstrate that disobedience will be punished. The taking away of a toy or priviledges will ensue.
God didn't stop loving them, but He had to show them He meant what He said.
