Try leaving him alone when he's resting. My Stimpy whacks me upside the head when she want to play. Picture this; she walks up beside me on the sofa and looks me in the eye for a moment...and whack!!! She then jumps to the other end and looks at me. Thats my cue to chase her through the house like overgrown children. Hey, seriously; you NEED to get to know your bud. You'll BOTH benefit from it.LUCK

No, don't get rid of the meanie :( She will surely get put to sleep if shes taken to any shelter due to her bad behavior :( I have a big meanie right now, an orange and white tabby cat. Try this- get a pop can, fill it about 1/4 way with pennies, then tape the top shut. When your cat tries biting the kid, give it a good shake. Cats hate this noise. Also say "no!" in a loud and firm noise. The cat better run away from your kid...if she doesn't, lock the cat in the bathroom for a few minutes immediately after she approaches the kid to bite. She won't like that either, so eventually she should get the point.

Based on your description of the bite, it is obvious that he isn't trying to harm you. If he had a behaviorial problem the bites would be harmful.
I have two male cats, one of which displays this type of behavior. The difference between the two is that the one that play bites was initially a feral (wild) cat that I domesticated.
In researching this type of behavior I found that this is very common among males especially ferals that have been domesticated. This is a showing of love and affection. In the wild, nips are often exchanged while playing and grooming.
Unless the bites are painful, drawing blood, or hissing and clawing are included - consider this a loving exchange from your feline. Observe your cats personality while interacting with him. You will come to know what your cat likes and when. You can determine from observation what draws this response.
If you are bothering or have irritated him, a slight nip will not be the only thing that you receive.
Relax and enjoy his expression of love for you.

Is he neutered? Male cats are more aggressive when unaltered, but I have a female who does the same thing. Some cats simply get overstimulated and carried away... notice how kittens play with each other, lots of biting and hind leg kicking at each other, he's just treating your hand like a playmate. Cats have a touch-me!/don't-touch-me! problem sometimes (lol) they are independent but we have domesticated them enough that they enjoy our touching them. I think they simply get carried away and overstimulated (my female is nipping after two strokes, but she'll turn around and nudge me for more attention). Try keeping a little spray bottle of water or a little squirt gun near, and when he nips, just give him a spritz on the face. He'll forgive you and eventually he'll get the message biting is bad.

It may just be his way of communicating to you that he has had enough petting. Does his tail switch before he bites? That is usually an indication that he has reached his max on the petting. Some cats get over-stimulated by too much petting and you need to be alert to the signals he is giving you that he has reached his limit at any one time.

He either wants to left alone, or it could be he just doesn't like to be touched in certain spots. My male cat does not like to be touched near his tail, but he likes to have his head and neck petted. So maybe he is just sensitive and you need to figure where to not touch him.

Your cat wants you to play with him. He's pretending your hand is a mouse or something else like that to try and catch. If i was you i would play with him when he does that and maybe get him a little mouse toy.

My kitten will snuggle up to me, lick my face, and then nip me. I know it is not mad at me. It must be just a built in habit like burying in the litter box.

He may just want to be left alone. I know my sister has a 13 year old cat that does that when she wants to be left alone. Just not in the mood to be petted I guess.
