I'm 19, I've taken the year off from my Bachelor of Engineering course due to mental overload, and I feel I'm going insane. I've always had social problems as a child, and the school counsellor suspected Asperger's and depression. Last year, I saw the doctor and took Zoloft for 6 months. I've taken my last repeat about 5-10 months ago. Now, I'm experiencing a serious decline in mental function, as though I've got dementia or brain damage or something. 4 years ago, this all began. I used to be good at school, but for the last few years, my grades went downhill. In my first year of university (2005), I failed miserably, but back then, my mental decline was steady. Now, it's exponential... It's taking me a great deal of effort to write this. Although I am confident with my spelling and grammar, I feel that my sentences are awkwardly expressed. I'm also forgetting things that I used to know. I've had a CT scan and brain tumor is ruled out, so what the hell is wrong with me?

By the way, I've lived a fairly boring, deprived childhood. I never grew up with video games, exciting books or computers, I never listened to a lot of popular music, and I hardly ever went to parties or went out with friends. In fact, my last birthday party was probably when I was 8 years old. I've never done drugs, and I rarely drink, so we can rule that out, and I don't have much of a life. I'm lazy, I lack motivation, I seldom read and write, and I get out of bed at 12:00 noon. Obviously, I've never had a girlfriend, I don't have my licence, due to the fact that I failed my test 3 times (that could be attributed to an anxiety problem) and I live at home with my parents.

The stress of school is alot. And if you have personal things going on too it's very hard on your body and mind. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders and know what you want. I'm not saying it's not medical, I think that taking time for yourself and doing something (other than school)at this time might be what you need. Don't quit school, but maybe you need to take an adventure. travel, new sport, or find something that makes you feel like you again. I know that's easy to say. Good luck. My heart goes out to you.

Ask your doctor if he can do a test for ADHD, and basic Schizophrenia signs, also have him do a blood test for syphillis which can go unrecognized that may have spread to the brain, there are many other types of depression and anxiety that only a neurologist could address. Your grammar and sentences are expressed just fine, you sound like an intelligent person, make an appt with a neurologist and bring up these possibilities to him and ask him to start some testing before it gets any worse. God Bless and Good Luck.

Go back to a medical doctor as well as a pshyciatrist and explain you symtoms . Between the two you will be able to get your answer. You must make those phone call to jump start your life.
It could be so many different things that are causing your symtoms and only great medical exams can figure out just what the problem is.

Try a different doctor, But sounds like what i went through with anxiety disorder. Panic attacks can be so horrible. Some of the symptoms of anxiety and anxiety attacks is ... a sense of doom or something really bad is going to happen, that your loosing your mind, that your having a heart attack, dizziness, sense of disconnection ... unreality, and lots more. Take a look at mayo clinic's web site ... it has good information on anxiety and the symptoms. i suffered for years with it and it just kept getting worse until i was having about 8 attacks a day ... one right after another. i thought i had a brain tumor, i was loosing my mind and i was going to die ... and when you feel like that well it is really hard to concentrate on anything. i finally went to my doctor and he clued in right away. Check with another doctor cause ... anxiety attacks cause actual physical and mental symptoms. Good luck
ps. you express yourself very well

you know....there is nothing wrong with you. i appreciate how you describe urself and the problem ur having now. go and visit a psychiatrist he can prescribe you something different than the first one and you will be ok. trust yourself. i know you have some talents which you just hide from people. start to envolve yourself to your family activities and not just sleep the whole day. later you will learn to participate outside activities too and gain some new friends. im so proud of you that you dnt use prohibitted drugs or drown urself with alcohol. see you are a responsible person, you can do it life is not boring. make use of it bcoz we seldom can have it. lastly, ask some spiritual guidance.....PRAY once sadness or depressoin attacks you. believe yourself ok? find work if you can to keep your mind busy.

It could be a number of different things.
I am not a doctor and can not tell you what is wrong but I could suggest that perhaps your depression has come back or you have developed some other mental disability.
Perhaps you should seek the advice of a psychiatrist or psychologist!

Depression can cause the symptoms you are describing. I'm not sure what you mean by taken your last repeat. Maybe you need to go back on the Zoloft. It helped me when I was in college.

Well, you're special. And YA is the last place you should be looking for answers! Take your concerns to a psychiatrist, not a psychologist, and get therapy. Sheesh, YA, the new medicine.

Maybe it has to do with your diet. Do you take vitamins and excercise regularly?

Excercise pumps oxigen and blood to the brain and keeps it healthy, vitamins can improve energy and focus. Try some gynsen tablets.

Most of all keep a positive attitude, CHIN UP!
