How many dogs? Are they the same breed? Certain breeds are more likely to have skin allergies. I have a boxer mix, and he has food allergies. Food allergies is one of the most common reasons for this behavior. If it is only 2 dogs of the same breed doing it, it is likely an allergy. If it is more then they could likley have gotten mange.
Food allergies will make their eyes puffy, their coat dull and they will shed more. They will also scratch and bite a lot. If this sounds like them, try a different dog food. Lamb and Rice formulas usually work well for a food allergy. It could also be a pollen allergy, or any number of other things. I would take them to a vet and have them checked out. If you cannot/will not do that, try switching the dog food and see if it helps. If after a week or so there is no improvement it is not the food. Be careful because mange can be a serious health risk to a dog.

There are many reasons dogs itch. Fleas would be my number one rule out since it seems to be both dogs. Fleas can be very sneaky, so even if you think they don't have them I would treat them for fleas with something from the vet like Advantage or Frontline. The second reason would be allergies. Dogs can be allergic to pollen, mold, dog food, houshold products, lawn chemicals etc. See your vet to diagnose and treat allergies. The third reason dogs can get itchy is dry skin. Dry skin can be caused by too frequent bathing, poor quality dog food, or just genetics. For dry skin I would bathe the dog no more than one time a month, and add a teaspoon or two (depending on the size dog) of olive oil to their food every day.

My dog does this too from time to time. Especially in the winter season it gets worse. But I recently found out that my shitzhu has a liver problem plus allergies. I was recommended by my vet to give him a half of a Benadryl tablet twice a day along with his other medicine. His diet was changed to a food that was less than 10%crude protein along with bathing him oatmeal based shampoo and conditioners. I've took the liberty of giving him a fish oil tablet as well and it helps a lot. Hope your pup starts feeling better. But I agree with those whom advised you to take him to the vet just to make sure he isn't allergic to anything or to see if it's an health issue.

some breeds have skin irritations that will cause them to scratch & will scratch a bare spot. it could also be from fleas that would cause more of the biting / do not rule out the food or mange. your best bet would be take your dog to the vet right away because mange can get ahold of a dog quickly & spread very easily to other animals. sounds like a hot spot from fleas or the food you are feeding but if the dog is around other animals it would be best to take to the vet. try revolution it covers worms, fleas, ticks, ear mites as frontline & advantage is just for the fleas / ticks

It is possible they have allergies. Both of my dogs have allergies and to different things. Both of them are allergic to certain grasses in the fields. If they get out there they will scratch and chew at themselves like crazy. They then get Benedryl our vet tolds us to keep them on it but I do not like to unless they come in contact with one of the allergens. My older dog has major food allergies so he is on a controlled diet.
Dry skin can also cause the dogs to scratch, oatmeal bathes work great for that.
You can try buying some of the anti-itch shampoos sold at the pet stores I use Sulfodene and it works great to elivate the itching.

The first thing to do is take them to a vet. secondly, skin problems is often food related. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. could be a food allergy. I'd consult a vet but you may want to check whats in their dog food. Many dogs have allergies to wheat, corn and other fillers that many commercial dog foods contain. As always, you should definitely check with your vet.

They sell hot spot treatment at the grocery store
