Iran supports the Shiite majority in Iraq because Iran is a Shiite Muslim country. Iran is probably also looking to the future when President Bush realises that the USA has lost yet another incursion into a sovereign country and thus, when the coallition forces withdraw, Iran will almost certainly take over the southern half of Iran (the Shiite region), with its oil wells, making a sort of Greater Iran.
If that happens (and many people inside and outside Iraq think it will), then Bush's ill considered venture into Iraq will have resulted in Iran becoming even more influential and powerful - and the USA will still have no control over Iraq's oil!

As to why the Shias and Shiites are killing one another - well, it's all to do with who is going to control the country. Therefore, instead of sitting down and calmly discussing solutions, and in the manner so beloved of fundamentalists, they just try to kill as many of the opposition as they can.

What an appalling disaster Iraq has turned out to be. Well done George W Bush!

I'm getting confused here. Why is Iran a shite Muslim country? Who decides on quality? What is shite for one person may be excellent for someone else.

Oh and Cher didn't kill Sonny - he died from injuries incurred when he hit a tree whilst skiing. Sonny Bono's son later became lead singer of U2, I think. He flew spy planes before that, or something.

for hundreds of years, the shia and sunni in iraq lived in peace. most iraqi families have sunni and shia members. under the rule of saddam, the shia were oppressed, imprisoned, and killed. now that saddam is out of power, the majority shia are in power. it would be best if everyone could just live peacefully, but you know politicians won't allow that. i suspect the US and Saudi Arabia have a lot to do with the sectarian tensions, but I have no proof of this.

Because Iran is a shia state and sunni and shia hate each other because each thinks they should be in charge of Islam
