I think the cost of the implant itself is quite low. Also the procedure doesn't take longer than root canal + restauration (which may cost around $1,500). Why then is the cost of an implant $3,000?

#1 its worth it
#2 a crown with root canal will cost yes, 1500 however the crown willlast a good 8-12 years and they you will probably have to get another
#3 the tooth under the crown can go bad
#4 the implant took a lot of study to perfect
#5 - can you say titanium -- it's better then platnum ; )
#6 the cool x-ray you get with a screw in your head
#7 -you can honestly say - no i don't have a screw loose LOL

had an implant and have to admit - it's MUCH better then the bridge below it - easier to care for and less annoying! the two crown bridge was a little less then the implant. had i not needed one of them crowned immediately andthe other soon, i'd have gone with another implant instead.
let's hope you itemize on your taxes - at least you can write it off! hey we have to look at the bright sinde somehow ; )

Besides a degree in dentistry, to place an implant, a dentist has to have additional (and costly) training. The titanium placed in the bone is only available from a few sources and is VERY expensive for the practice to purchase. If the implant part purchased doesn't fit or isn't right, it's wasted...it it becomes extremely important that the dentist and staff know exactly what they are doing.

The risk of complications increases the dentist's potential liablity, so that factors in.

Despite what someone said above, NO dentist is motivated to treat the same tooth over and over again. A permenant solution is exactly what the provider wants, and an implant is far more long-lasting and reliable than a root canal.

I'm curious why people question the cost of dental surgery, but if they want an operation on their heart or brain, they don't bargain hunt.

I just had a dental implant put in. I didn't feel any pain during the procedure and I haven't had any pain since either. The surgeon told me that whether or not they put in a temp depends on where in the mouth the tooth is. For instance, if it's at the front, you might not want to have a gap there for six months while the bone heals, so in that case he said they'd put in a temp. Mine was a molar at the back, so he hasn't put a temp on it. As for expense - so far I've had the titanium post put in and that cost $3,500. The crown will follow in about three months time and that will be another $1,800. If you're going to have this done, make sure you go to the best person you can afford! The guy who did mine is, I think, the best in Sydney. He's done hundreds of them and he also teaches on the subject. Don't just go to some guy advertising in the paper or whatever.

Health care or medical science has never been cheap to come by. It requires years of study and research before any health related product is allowed to be launched. Otherwise, there would have been more population in the graves than walking around. Implants (special titanium) are meant for masses but not yet mass-produced for their added cosmetic angle, hence, expensive. Once you have it in mouth you will feel the difference.

Dental Implants is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and lasik surgery in India by a company called Forerunners Healthcare. The Price for dental and lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.
They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Implants are expensive because it is a surgical procedure. Here's how it works. Dentist cuts open your gums to expose jaw bone, drills a hole in your jaw bone and screws in an anchor. you heal for about 6 mos then the crown is screwed on to the anchor. This is based on if your body doesn't reject it. otherwise the doc will have to go back in and remove the anchor.

its because soon as you damage your teeth your basicly screwed...'the dentist owns your life'.

an implant is a permanent solution, apparently they are stronger than natural teeth, so denists can't be doing with that!!

once you have that in they can make no more money from your damaged tooth therefore they charge you a arm and a leg for this procedure.
