From personal experience, I prefer Sony over Canon.

I've had both and prefer Sony. If you take a lot of indoor shots, Sony is the best in low light conditions. Tape gives you better quality than DVD, and it is very difficult to edit DVD capture because the compression is different than your editing program. If you want to do much editing, go for the tape.

Wow, that's a loaded question. After you do your research on features for cameras in your price range, you'll answer the lense and tape questions. The next best approach is to use them both. Either borrow a friends or rent each one, use it under various conditions and decide for yourself.
