I must add this detail. I have known people in the military that came from well to do families. Two, Al Gore and John Kerry, could hardly be considered from poor families. Ted Kenedy also served in the US Army during the Korean War, and could hardly be considered poor. There are some families that have a tradition of being in the military. However, most that hold public office today, have no such traditions in their families. They usually got out of the draft because of a bad knee, and go on to play college football after they got the deferment (Trent Lott). A boil on their butt (Rush Limbaugh). "Bad knee", not even having to show up for induction physical (Barry "Candy Man" Goldwater, Jr.).

Yet another question in the Military category to bash the Republicans. Will you people ever stop?
btw: My whole family is Republican and I have a brother in Iraq right now. I was in the U.S. Army for 4 years, so was my husband. My grandfathers both served and my father was in the AF.
Note: Not all people in the military come from poor or lower middle class families. If you have never served in the military don't make stupid statements like that.

The last I heard, it was only 1 or 2. Now, in all fairness, many of them do not have children of an age eligible to join the military, but I am certain more than 1 does. I can think of a very prominent politician with 2 daughters in their 20's who are not in the military...what I wonder even more is how many members of Congress actually served themselves in the military in any capacity.
I just checked the library of congress, and the stats I found quickley were for the 108th congress. The info I got was the 153 current members of Congress served in the military, in teh House 117 members, including 69 Reps and 48 Dems and in the Senate, 35 mombers, incl 19 Reps, and 16 Democrats.
I must say, that number is much higher than I thought it would be...I am pleasantly surprised.

Having a kid in the military is not enough. What should be asked is, who has a kind in the war zones of Afghanistan or Iraq? Just one: Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota. A Democrat.
Republicans are Chicken Hawks. It's so easy to send others into war when you're not at risk. Bush was a draft dodger who went AWOL. Cheney had "other priorities" than to serve his country at war. Can you imagine what they'd do to a Democrat who said something like that?

I never understood the point of this question. People always ask it thinking it proves some great point about certain political groups not really backing up what they say. The reality is children aren't here as a human sacrifice for their politician parents. I think the people who vote for war or support it in politics should be the ones to fight (granted they are a little bit old), not their children.

This one of those Not really Miltary questions that take up space here. Off hand? About 3-4 come to mind. The Senator from ND lost a nephew recently in action so I guess that counts. If I asked you to poll 535 of your neighbors, you would find the numbers about the same. So whats your political point ???

about half a dozen members of Congress or the Administration have children serving in the military, according to this report.
I can't find anything to corroborate it, however.
Sidebar: There are between 40-60 military veterans who are running for office in the upcoming elections (depending on your source). Nearly all of them have recent service either in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Nearly all of them (all but two, again depending on your source) are Democrats, too. Interesting.

Good question. The last report I heard there was only 1 congressman child in the service. I don't know if that # has changed from the last I heard it a few years back. I would like to know WHY you ask.
