Protein, protein is always the best drink, aside from water which I hope you're drink plenty of :) But protein helps repair the muscles you just worked out, makes them better and stronger. Energy drinks aren't all that great at any time, they might give that little bit of boost, but you body becomes dependent after time for that help. I would suggest getting your enegry from healthy foods, and not foreign unnatural processed products, in the long run it doesn't do you any good.

if you goal is to recover from the workout and to gain muscle, the best thing to do is to consume a quickly digesting protein and simple cabs - but stay away form fat.

After working out, your body will attempt to over-compensate for the workout. Your muscles will have the ability to store more glycogen after the workout, than it could before your workout. So, you should eat foods such as: white rice, white potato, pasta...

You should also consume some lean protein to supply your body with the amino acids that it needs to repair muscle. Chicken, fish, or whey protein. Please also note: amino acid uptake by the muscles is TWICE AS HIGH if protein is consume BEFORE your workout. So, if you are looking to gain muscle, it would be a good idea to consume a whey protein shake (~20 grams of protein) prior to training.

Ideally both. The isotonic drink named Accelerade, if you've heard of it, is an isotonic drink containing a carb-to-protein ratio of 4:1 and has been shown in studies to be superior to normal isotonics in speeding recovery or keeping the athlete going, especially in endurance sports. (Of course it costs a bomb...)
