Latte is 3/4s milk - 1/4 coffee
Cappucino is half and half
I'm Italian...it's my family's country's invention.
Before it became a flakey yuppy drink...Latte was for us kids any old time and Cappucino was for after dinner - usually with a shot of brandy in it to boot..

I used to work a coffee place and the difference was that a latte was 2 shots of espresso then 10 ounces of steamed milk, and a Capp was 1/3 espresso, 1/3 streamed milk and 1/3 foam.

Both start with espresso.
Cappachino then adds some hot (steamed) milk and quite a lot of foam. Its normally served in a smallish cup.
A caffe latte has espresso with a lot of hot milk, and only a tiny bit of foam on top.
In theory, there's also cafe au lait, which should be strong (french style) coffee with hot milk, generally in a bowl. Order one at starbucks or anywhere else, and they'll hand you a caffe latte.

it’s a matter of proportion — latte has more milk.
cappuccino is a serving of espresso (about 2 ounces) with essentially similar amounts of milk and a rather stiff milk foam. Caffè latte is a serving of espresso with about three times as much milk, topped with a short head of foam. So a latte is milder and has a milkier taste.
