Do you agree with people that say if somebody doesnt speak english they should not be here even if they are legal residents or citizens? or that English should be the only language spoken? I think these makes my state (New York) so interesting, you see people from everywhere in the world and different cultures without having to travel around the globe. Why do some people think this is wrong? As long as english remains the first language which it will always be I dont see what is wrong with it, they teach foreing languages in college

Yes, I read every word in the question. I do agree if someone does not speak any English they should not be here or they should learn. English is the official language of the majority of states and is obviously the official language of all of America. In a way you contradict your own question. "Do you agree with people that say if somebody doesnt speak english they should not be here even if they are legal residents or citizens?" "Why do some people think this is wrong? As long as english remains the first language which it will always be I dont see what is wrong with it, they teach foreing languages in college" How can english remain the first language if people who migrate to America refuse to learn English?

I don't care what language you speak at home. It's when, as a citizen, I'm refused a job because I don't speak Spanish even though I am bi-lingual. It matters when people immigrate here from non-English and non-Spainsh speaking countries and have to learn to English and do....and are now expected to add Spanish to their list because ONE group of people WON'T learn English. English is the global business language and Latin is for medical degrees and by sheer numbers I suppose Chinese would be the next choice. But all said and done. English is this countries language. You have to speak English to become a citizen. What ever other language you speak is your choice. No one is demanding you change your relegion or much of anything else to immigrate here but 1 thing....speak English. That is not too much to ask. If I moved to any other country I would expect to have to learn their language, not them mine.

I live in the southwest, and we see it differently here. When everything has to be printed in two languages, all children have to be taught in two languages and when a legal American citizen is required to speak Spanish to get a job, then it has gone way too far. This country was founded by English speakers, our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution ,our Bill of Rights are all written in English by people who spoke English. The government of this country is run in English our laws are in English.
You can speak any language you want but you need to learn English since it is our primary language.I speak several languages but it was my choice as an American to learn them not be forced to learn a language not spoken by my government.English needs to made this country's official language and there are bills now in Congress to that effect.
If every language of every immigrant here was included in our system then no one would understand any one and this country would come to a standstill. Why just Spanish, why only Spanish,it is biased and unfair. No other nation allows legal and illegals immigrants to dictate public policy's and it must end.You have it in your power to end this madness ,VOTE in NOvember, vote for the person who will push your views on this and all other illegal immigration issues.Secure our borders and begin the deportation process of all illegals. No amnesty

No one is saying that only English should be spoken in the U.S. The big debate is over the fact that a lot of the illegals who come here don't speak ANY english, and want us to conform to their wishes and speak their language for them. Most of the people I know have no problem with foreign immigrants speaking their native language here, but most of the immigrants I know have learned to speak english so that they can get by in everyday life. America is an English speaking country, so people coming here should be able to speak English, in ADDITION to their native language. People in other countries don't go out of their way to speak english for any of the tourists, businesspeople, etc., so why should we be any different for the people coming here?

I think if you are going to emigrate somewhere, you need to speak the language. You should not expect others to speak yours. For everday business and education, English should be the only language spoken(except foreign language class). What you want to speak in your personal conversations is no one's business. It is good to learn a foreign language for your own benefit, but you should not be forced to learn a language because a particular immigrant population will not learn English.

If someone doesn't speak any English then they should not be here. They can speak other languages but they need to know English too. That is the language of the US.

Try calling when you have a question on a product, computer or medical services, or medical bills. You can't understand the people you are talking to. When is the last time you had a doctor that wasn't from India or some other foreign country?

How can you integrate into a society if you dont know the language?
If you wanted to live in France would you go over there and refuse to speak french?
They would laugh you out of the place and call you a stupid American for not learning THEIR language...
And we are the ones who are obnoxious?
I think not
English as a Primary language
