I'm a volunteer at a nursing home. How can I develop a relationship with my assigned partner?

Tell them about Your life today and ask for their advice and opinions. They love feeling respected and included. (Try not to ask them about their life today. Either they can't remember what it is or they don't like it!)
Talk to their family to get some background info on what they like and were proud of in their life, mention those topics and see if they take off on that.

Talk about things your partner likes, or just listen to him/her talk about these things. Do things with your partner that he/she likes. Bring in some things he/she likes to show him/her. There are books about building rapport. Read one.

I would be careful that you don't drain too much or your energy or spend an excessive amount of time with this.
