MiniDV has a significantly higher data rate than MPEG2, and DVDs use MPEG2. For example, the data rate for MiniDV is constant at 25 megabits per second (Mbps), while the data rate for MPEG2 varies from 1.5 to 4.5 Mbps. MPEG compression is efficient but I still prefer more bits to fewer bits when it comes to video quality.

If you transfer from the MiniDV camcorder to a DVD recorder using an iLink cable, you will be recording 25 Mbps on the DVD. It will be saved on the DVD as data and not as an MPEG2 file. This will make it incompatible with most consumer DVD players but you will maintain the best quality for your archives. You can always edit the video and create an MPEG2 file in the future.

On the other hand, the Sony DCR-DVD805 will create playable MPEG2 DVDs in the camcorder, which can be convenient. They might even look great, depending on the quality of the camcorder. But my preference would be for the 25 Mbps solution, the DCR-HC96.

The DVD quality from the HC96 will depend on the software that's used. Some software does a better job converting from mini-dv to mepg2. But if you're strictly comparing DVD to DVD, I think there would be very little difference.

If you want or need to edit the video, I strongly suggest the mini-dv format.
