A white like across the screen like that is a sure sign that either the flyback transformer or the valve on the tube has had it. You can get it repaired but it may be a symptom of a deeper malaise and in that case it'll happen again soon enough. A job like that is a major repair and after 7 years it may be difficult to source the parts anyway. My advice is to get a new one and be done with it.

I thought we had a full crop of clueless idiots on this one until I read tv tims answer, his is the only correct one out of 14 !!. I will reiterate what tim said --- the fault is very definitely not the pic tube . As tv tim says the fault is a vertical collapse , probable cause is a dry joint on the vert o/p chip. All it needs is a little re soldering !! OK Cheers Pete .
OK Andy S what is it if the line is red or green ? ????? Look at the sources of tv tim and myself , that's 67 years between us !!! do you know someone who can beat that !!!!!

If it's a blue line then the frame has collapsed.
If you know someone who does electronics it's usually the HT transformer solder connections.
These days it's not worth trying to get it repaired by a technician cheaper to buy one from Asda or Tesco

Speaking from experience, it sounds like you picture tube has gone out. TV's have gotten so inexpensive that I found it actually saved me money to go out and purchase a new one. When you consider the cost of the TV technician, and add on the cost of labor and parts, the total will more than likely be more than purchasing a new TV. Plus, you put all of that money into an "old TV".
Check out new TV's, and good luck to you.

After 7 years of probably constant use I would say it is well f****d. Time to spend some money. It sounds as if the tube has gone.

The tv repair shops have dwindled to a handfull right now. No big name companies, just mom and pop storee. What does that tell you? It is too cost prohibitive to repair a tv, just buy another one.

Bin it and go and buy a fish tank - stare at that every day instead - far better entertainment value.
(Few downsides - you have to buy fish, feed them and clean out the tank once in a while. Oh, and it won't play DVD's)
