This is a great place and easy to get to by public transport. Brasserie Saint Quentin -- a little piece of France in Central London. It was recommended by a friend who has lived in France for many years and is most particular about his food! We too were delighted! It has a classic French menu: things like: Civet de lapin aux olives vertes, saucisses de Toulouse grillées sauce échalottes, Filet de bar avec cassolette d'aubergines,... The set menu is relatively good value (£13.50 for 2 courses and £15 for 3 only from noon to 3pm and 6.30pm to 7.30pm). Also vegetarian menu.
Average price à la carte :£34
Address: 243 Brompton Road

Closest tube: Knightsbridge or South Kensington

Smollensky's is amazing for a variety of quality and great presentation. Canary Wharf is posh and intimate but fantastic and Strand is more pub like atmosphere but still great food. Or The Texas Embassy Cantina in Trafalgar Square. Both good for groups.

Try this place... Quaglinos its the nuts... its got a trendy bar attached, its underground, quite big & is very impressive and its Jasper Conrans. I went there only 2 weeks ago, there was 5 of us & it worked out including 3 bottles of wine 2 courses (some had starters, some had deserts (the dames of course!)) anyway it worked out at £48 per head, which considering... the quality, the venue etc etc & location (London) aint bad at all.

It does depend what kind of atmosphere you like but TGIs in Piccadilly is always fun for birthdays if you like the whole thing of the staff singing for you. A similar place which I would prefer is Hard Rock Cafe- both you and your friends and the Dad should like it in there as they play Rock tunes- old and new and there is memorabilia on the walls.

Depending on your budget, Octave in Covent Garden is good.
I think its about £30 pe head for three courses. They play live jazz at weekends, the service is impeccable and the food is modern english with vegetarian meat and fish options. The menu changes weekly.

Try out Sofra: http://www.sofra.co.uk/ in covent garden or Özer http://www.sofra.co.uk/SofraOzIndex.html.
They're Turkish, not expensive and have loads of atmosphere.
Well worth a try!
