Score the border then spray with fabric softener and water mixture. Let stand and it should peel off easily. Otherwise paint over it with a textured painting technique.

You don't need anything but a spray bottle and a slightly rough sponge.

Loosen one edge and spray warm water so it will start to soak it gently on the edges. It will take a minute or so , then gently start to peal.

If it is a paper surface it will soak in through the surface of the paper, if it is glossy surfaced it will need to soak in at the edges.

The paste is water based and will dissolve when you add warm water to it. Although you mentioned sticky and none I have ever removed have been sticky, the water based paste drys.
If it isn't water based I apoligize as this method probably won't work.

After you get an edge started it is just, spray, soak, peal, scrub, repeat until you are done.

Good Luck!!

Spray with warm soapy water. Let soak in and scrape right off. They sell a product made for that very purpose but I found water works as well. I've also used windshield washer fluid in a squirt bottle with great success. The alcohol cuts the glue well. If glossy and water resistant you'll need to scratch it well first to break through the glaze.

The fabric softner and water mixture is the best and the cheapest. I too have used it numerous times on remodel jobs. It removes the glue adhesive also.

On the t.v. program "Sell this house" they diluted fabric softener and sprayed it on and left it for a minute and it came off fairly easy. There are products you can buy but the softener is cheaper.
