Both my dogs have kennel cough not picked up by being in kennels. Does any one know of any natural remedies that can help them. They have been to vets & are on antibiotics.
What cough medicines can be given to dogs?
Thanks for your help

I hope this will help you.

Tracheobronchitis, commonly referred to as "kennel cough" is usually caused by the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica. It can also be caused by several viruses.

Some vets feel that it is best not to treat this condition with antibiotics since it is almost always self limiting and the organism is a normal inhabitant of the upper airways.

Treatment may lead to resistance problems and difficulty treating the most serious complication, pneumonia, if it occurs. So many dogs are very uncomfortable due to the severity of the cough that I think most vets do use antibiotics to treat this.

I personally like sulfa/trimethoprim combination antibiotics such as Ditrim (Rx) or Tribrissen (Rx) or doxycycline but I suspect that many antibiotics work well for this condition -- and no antibiotic at all is OK most of the time.

Use of a cough suppressant can make the dog a lot more comfortable, whether antibiotics are used or not.

After all that info you recieved from heleneus, just remember this in the future. Did your dog recieve a kennel cough vaccine recently? Or was is around any other dog that did? The reason I ask is because the vaccine the vets use is a LIVE vaccine. It can, will, and does actually give the dog the illness, and most certainlly after you've vaccinated your dog with it, is contagious to other dogs. The kennel I work at will not allow any dogs that have had the vaccine 2 weeks prior to entering our kennel. We have over 75 dogs boarding at a time, and have NEVER had a kennel cough outbreak, or any dogs contract the disease. Keep that in mind next time your vet talks you into the vaccine. As a matter of fact, after the first 2 years of your pets life, ALL vaccines are no longer required (except a rabies every 3 years). Just like humans, they only need their fist full set of shots. Do you have the same doses of vaccinations every year??? All your life??? You can research this information on line, and see for yourself what a racket these vets have going for them. As a matter of fact, research has shown and proven that annual vaccinations on pets is causing illness in them. From kidney failure, to heart and lung problems to tumers, to other fatel cancers.
The best thing I can tell you is to keep your pet on the antibiotics suggested by your vet. Sometimes a stronger one is in order, it all depends on what you pet was given, and how advanced the virus is. As for an over the counter cough syrup, you can use robitussin. Check with your vet on the dosage amount according to your dogs weight. A good home remedy is a warm cup of tea, with lemon and honey. I mean it, lol, it will help the dogs, just like humans.

Our dog has just recovered from kennel cough and did so with the vet's antibiotics. We kept him on soft foods for the period of the disease and gave him lots of liquids. Be very careful of any remedies suggested unless you have checked with a vet that they will not harm your pet. We were told our dog could have picked up the virus just by sniffing grass where an infected dog had previously sniffed so it would be well worthwhile have an injection to prevent any recurrence in future. It is extremely contagious. Hope your pets soon recover.

Give the antibiotics time to work. Over the counter medications can kill animals. If your dogs are still coughing try calling your vet and asking for cough tablets. Make sure to keep your dogs away from other dogs until they are fully recovered, then it would probably be good to get a bordatella vaccine.

Phone the vet to ask about the cough mixture. Its actually illegal to prescribe or sell medicine for animal use unless you are a vet; so we can't legally advise you.

Otherwise a teaspoon of honey in a cup of hot water will sooth a sore throat.

'NO COUGH MEDICINES CAN BE GIVEN" you just have to let the antibiotics take there course that is the only thing that will help with kennel cough. It takes time for the antibiotics to work

A teaspoon of childs benalyn (chesty cough) twice a day can help. Also try putting your dog in a steamy room (Bathroom) as the moist air helps to loosen the phlegm.
If you prefer you can put the dog in a cage and put a bowl of boiling water by the cage (dont let the dog get to it) and cover the cage and bowl with a towel and let the dog inhale the steam.

None. You must wait till the antibiotics do their job. If they have been tot he vet and you were given the antibiotics just let them work. If you arent satisfied with that then try a new vet or call your vet to see if they have anything else.
