The single slice slot has the temprature sensor that tells the toaster when the bread is toasted the way you want it. (via the doneness control knob or slider).

If you use the other slot your bread will either overcook or undercook depending on the type of sensor used.

If you put the bread in the wrong side, it wouldn't turn the toaster on. It is wired to only heat on one side if you put in one slice.

They have them for the same reason you should never remove the tag from a mattress. It is a cruel trick to get you arrested.

the space- time continuum in your kitcchen would get seriously F-ed up !! and all the other bread in the cupboard would be very jealous! you know how bread gets.....
