There seems to be no doubt that this occurs to certain people and the evidence has been carefully documented. Why it happens, though, is a mystery and all the cases I have heard of have involved Roman Catholics, most famously of all Francis of Assisi. I have an open mind on this issue, never having come about it personally, but it occurs to me that it might be something to do with the "fellowship of His sufferings" described in Philippians 3:10.

There are all sorts of extraordinary events the origin of which can be traced to the divine or the demonic. If we think about it for a moment though and reason on the matter, what divine purpose could there reasonably be for a person to experience stigmata? Jesus went through it because of the way he was put to death. His death, however, provided a propitiatory sacrifice for mankind. Reasonably, there is nothing sacrificial or propitiatory when stigmata occurs in humans, is there? So, for whatever reason it manifests itself, what connection could it possibly have with divine purpose?

These marks are supposed to be in the same places as Jesus but the people who apparently get these stigmata get them in the wrong place e.g. Palms... body weight would rip nail through hand. Has to be behind wrist. Feet... shown on top of foot arch.... nail would have gone through just below ankle and legs would have rested on piece of wood so that the person would have to lift himself/herself up now and again for breath. Stigmata these people get seem to follow the Renaissance period were JC was shown as white, Robert Powell lookalike and nails went in the wrong places.

If a person suffers stigmata the church may or may not recognize it . There is an explanation for it .Science claims that you can get it by concentration.
Spirit of radio we know who the asker means by "us".Why come to the R&S section ?Is it because you want to believe?

Yes. I've met people who know Father Bruce (a priest not too far from me with the stigmata). THey have seen it with thier own eyes. I believe Padre Pio had the stigmata, and several saints. I believe it is real.

well, if your talking about Jesus wounds, such as nail marks appearing on peoples hands ( when Jesus was nailed to the cross) yes i do believe this happens.
i do not think it is Jesus though. your mind is a very power full thing, we only use 10% of it throughout our liefs. but people with such hard faith and strong belief may be accessing parts of our minds that can do these extrodinary things, such as stigmater

Yes, it's not a bad film. By the way, Jesus didn't go through his own hell for me - I insist you don't consider he did. You may believe he went through hell for you but he sure as hell didn't for me so how dare you say 'us', what gives you the right?

Nope. Just another form of hysteria. Many cases have proven to be self-inflicted wounds.

There are many cases of this condition. Quite a few are preserved on film, with qualified medical examiners to verify them.

I do, but don't know that it is an act of God. God and his angels are not the only ones working in this world
