When the president of the United States sworn to uphold the constitution and completely disregarding it why would it be a surprise that citizens do not hold it in high regard. It really should be no surprise. However they know it as it is something that is still taught in the schools.

I think there's a total lack of the necessary framework required to understand the Constitution. Without basic skills in Logic or a working knowledge of History that permits understanding what the founding documents eliminated, replaced and changed, and what they sought to prevent and protect, the Constitution does not appear to mean very much. To one ignorant of these things or without a passion for Liberty, it can be no more than the braying of a mule.

I marvel at the drivel that gets international acclaim in the form of Pulitzer Prizes, Academy Awards, Nobel Prizes, or sells a million records.

Perhaps if the founding fathers had used more profanity people would take it seriously. Maybe someone should put the Constitution into a rap format, that might be the answer.

I have read the constitution several times. It is basically a contract that was written when the country was founded

The courts and our legal system have made a mockery of this document. No where in it does it discuss abortion or do the word "seperation of church and state" appear.

For example - the constitution states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion"

This came out of the fact that King of England declared the Catholic and other christian churches illegal and founded the church of england. If you followed another church, you will persecuted or killed. This is basically why the mayflower set sail for the new world.

Our founders did not want this to happen in this new country and basically stated that in the constitution as defined above.

The court cases that have come out of this simple phrase shows me that some do not respect or understand or want to read somthing into this document that is not there. If people would only understand history, we would not have these silly issues in our courts.

While I would agree that many people are not as informed as they should be, your post is false. Most people believe in the Constitution and do take their freedoms seriously. If not then the Constitution would be constantly under amendment, which it is not. The Framers were very intelligent men, they saw well beyond their own time and placed heavy protections on how and under what circumstances the Constitution could be changed. I am constantly amazed at just how much foresight they really possessed in this area.

Now having said that. Your question cannot be answered properly because it is too broad in scope. Please provide specific examples of what the problems are that you perceive.

What is surprising is that when I clicked on your question I expected to see more commentary explaining your question.

Without any other commentary I have no idea why you think that there are any citizens who do not respect the Constitution "at all." Sure, I do know that many citizens cannot name the rights in the Bill of Rights and things like that. But why assert that people don't "respect" the Constitution?

I spent the last 20 years defending the Constitution against ememys foreign and domestic. I think your hanging around the wrong crowds. I believe most people living in our country have a great deal of respect for our Constitution. I always say that I may not agree with what your saying, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. God Bless America

Too many amendments to it. They need to wipe the slate clean and go back to hanging murderers, child molesters and cutting off the hands of thieves. Only sue the bad people. Kill the idiots that complain that their coffee is not hot and then turn around and sue the people that make the coffee hot because they don't know how to hold a cup.
Criminals should not have rights.

No, does not surprise me at all, when you realize that very few schools take time to teach civics, and each day civil rights are violated because the victims didn't know better...

I don't think that it is the issue that American don't know their constitution or respect it. The issue is that the GOP has watered!!!!!! down the rights of all americans. The only Americans who do know KNOW OR RESPECT OUR CONSTITIUTION IS THE GOP! AND NO THIS DOES NOT SUPRISE ME!

Our liberal run schools are more interested in teaching sex ed than history , civics or anything of true worth .
That way they can give slanted views rather than explain the why's of our form of government , our rights and our duties or responsibilities .
