One of the first things Mohammed did was make his followers take a solemn vow not to kill their children. At the time in Arabia, during periods of famine newborn girls sometimes would be buried in the sand if the family was afraid they couldnt afford to keep her. Mohammed insisted that if someone wanted to be a Muslim, they had to vow never to do this.
Mohammed also preached equality during a time of extreme racism. People were shocked when he appointed an Ethiopian follower as his first Imam to call the community to prayer.
Unfortunately as Mohammed became more powerful his "revelations" changed. Later, only women had to vow not to kill their children; the vow of Aqaba was replaced with another one to fight on Mohammed's side. After Mohammed expelled a tribe of Jews from Medina, when it came time to fight the next battle, the leader of a second tribe of Jews had second thoughts about which side they should fight on. In the end, the leader of the Jewish tribe decided not to fight at all, but there was a big storm and no battle after all. To punish this Jewish leader, all the men in his tribe were beheaded and the women and children were sold for ransom.
As Mohammed conquored Arabia, his methods and philosophies deteriorated -- power corrupts, and when you get your revelations directly from God, who can even present a different point of view?
Even so, after Mohammed died his followers started methods that were even worse than his. Much of what Islam has inherited was from them, not from Mohammed.

You have every right to ask this question because many muslim nations nowadays are weak, ignorant and dependent. But let me assure you, this is not because they are muslims; it's because they are not true muslims. It saddens me to say this but to many people nowadays, Islam is just a word in your ID and some occasions to celebrate and some hollow rituals to perform like physical exercises.
I cannot give you a modern example nationwise. You need to go back to history and see how strong, educated, enlightened, rich, generous and peaceful the muslim nation was when muslims were true muslims, during the time of Prophet Muhammad, during the time of Muslims Kalifs, etc. In fact, it was the muslim nation that imported science to the western world and rescued it from the dark ages, if you know history well.
The example I can give you now is personal. I am a Muslim and Islam has made me a better person and made my life a better place. My prayers and the morals or religion teach me not to lie, steal, kill, or hurt anyone. It even teaches me that I get rewarded just for smiling at people! It teaches me to think and seek knowledge as long as I live. It teaches me to be good to my neighbours, relatives and friends and to people generally (muslism and non-muslims).
One simple clarification and correction: the Quran and Islam teach us to kill in self-defence and when there is a threat but only as a last resort, peace is always the better option. When there is Jihad, it is in the name of Allah, not Prophet Muhammad. He was great, but he was just a prophet and a messenger from Allah.
Let me ask you a question: Out of millions of million muslims in the world, how many are terrorists?

Apparently, Muslims preserved some of the knowledge from Ancient Greece that would otherwise have been completely destroyed by the Christians in their bid to rid the world of knowledge and reason.

I have yet to see even ONE good action performed in the name of Islam. On the other hand, I could provide a long list of wicked actions. Before we see the old line about the Crusades or the Spanish Inquision, I'd like to say that they were bad things but they happened centuries ago. We shouldn't still be seeing barbaric acts in the twenty-first century.

Do you know that it is a blessing for a Muslim to do a good deed? do you know that Mosques have welfare programs in place and anyone suffering financial hardship can go to a Mosque and apply for help? That is the everyday stuff.
Do you know tha Islam is greatly responsible for the onset of the Renaissance in Europe? Science, math and medical advances are only a few contributions of Islamic societies to world history.
Mathematics would still be in bad shape if we followed Roman math comcepts. Our numerals are based on Arabic numerals and they were the ones who developed the concept of "zero" which made modern math possible. Oh yeah, modern music has its roots in the middle east.

I heard a very telling statement by Orhan Pamuk, the gentlemen who recently won the Nobel prize for Literature, during an interview.
He was answering a question and included this phrase in his answer, "...Islam and the secular world..."
This sounded very familiar to me. It is a religious pretext for division. It is what every religion does. Divide us all, one against another.
The problem you refer to is not the exclusive domain of Islam.
Have fun but be safe!

All religons teach us to be nice. People use religion to justify evil. Islam is in the spotlight at the moment but all religons have been used in the past. The troubles in Northern Ireland are another example.

They could be a good example for christians...... (btw I'm a christian) they are very disciplined with their prayer life..... they fast for spiritual cleansing/clarity. They are bold in their faith and are not afraid to show others (talking about the dress and veils)
Not all are violent or seeking to kill for their prophet. And the ones I know are always encouraging people to better themselves spiritually regardless if they follow Christ or not.

Most of us remember the tidal wave that hit Asia just after Christmas a few years ago. It is my understanding that the most of the nations that were effected by this tidal wave were Muslim nations. It is also my understanding that the riches Muslim nations donated far less then most of the Christian nations.

During Europe's Dark Ages, Islam preserved a great deal of ancient pagan culture, and transmitted it to the West.
One must also remember Christendom's rather bloody history where people were slaughtered in the name of God (burning witches and heretics, slaughtering Protestants, the Crusades, etc).
We are in the midst of a clash of civilizations, the secular West vs. Islam.
