I don’t know about the most creative, but the most effective way is to join this; http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

It only stops calls from within Europe and European companies so I still get the occasional marketing call from America or India but that is probably just once a fortnight. I used to have constant interruptions from telesales callers, but this service has made it much better!

Depends what they are selling!!

One generic way is the put the receiver down and leave them talking to themselves for a while...

Or I have tried being extra jolly and saying, "Oh, you're in telesales too are you? You know, I have this fantastic deal going on... (whatever it they are NOT selling)" Launch into the deal (eg, mobile phone). Ask them if they use a mobile and how much they pay a month etc etc...when they cut you off just say "Oh, not interested? Me neither!" and put the phone down!!

Or you could tell them now is not a good time cos your boyf/husband/girl is going down on you and it will make it hard to talk....

Or you could cover everything in a simple 'House is rented, dont own a mobile, please leave me alone cos im not in the mood to listen to your 'wonderful' offers, thank you for calling, bye' and put the phone down!!!

have fun!

Never put off telesales people. Keep them on the phone for as long as you can, asking loads of questions and sounding really interested. Then when they think they're about to close the sale, just say "on consideration, I don't think this is right for me." and wait for them to hang up. If they keep going trying to sell you stuff, they're paying for the call and not you. My best effort so far was to keep one on for 48 minutes whilst reading a Terry Pratchett novel. Sooner or later they realise you're not going to bite and hang up. If you do it enough times you get blacklisted and they don't bother you again.

An aged lady acquaintance spent some time discussing the supply of a conservatory with a telesales man and he was rather upset when she finally game him her address - a second floor flat.

Register with an anonymous call reject service. Most telesales people withhold their number (making them anonymous). If you sign up with this service, you won't get calls. It's not a creative answer, but it IS the most obvious. I haven't been bothered at all, but if they call from abroad, even this may not be enough.

These answers sound good for a laugh but you could register for the Telephone Preference Service, it's free if you do it yourself rather than pay an agency to do it, and then if you get called you can threaten them by telling them they risk a several thousands of pounds fine.
It does not stop the calls that say they are not selling but doing a survey and end up trying to get you to try their products.

Tell them you're going to have to put them on hold for a moment while you go and get a pen then put the phone next to a radio tuned to a music station. Check after ten minutes - they'll be gone, and you haven't even had to say "Off" let alone the other word!!!

Say "Just a minute I'll get her/him", lay the phone down or put it in a nearby drawer and walk away for about 10 minutes, sure it ties your phone up but they will tire of waiting, they are not making any money talking to a drawer.

Actually as soon as I can tell it is telemarketing call, I say very loudly "I am not interested, remove me from your list" and hang up.

Hand them over to the lady of the house who happens to be 3 years old. Or tell them you are busy and ask for their number so you can call them back. Or just put the phone down and leave it for a half hour. But personally I am in favour of a nice loud whistle...does the job everytime.

A mobile phone company were ringing me every other day and whenever I told them I was in a contract already and was happy they kept coming up with ways I could get out of it and switch to them, one day I told the woman on the other end that she must be c*** at her job if she's this desperate for customers and I were her I would hang up and get my coat. The calls stopped then. I wonder if she did it??
