I live in NY but what we did was found a hall at a FANTASTIC price and are having both the ceremony and reception there. It came out to, are you ready, $50 a head and that only didn't include the Maitrede's (sp??) tip which runs aprox $2 a head. This of course didn't include the DJ or the photographer.
What ever you do, do not try to do it yourself. It costs just as much money and is a lot more work, I looked into it.
Another thing you can do, is here in the states they have these cruise wedding's where you get a small group of friends and family, have the ceremony and reception on the boat and it rides the coast, unless you are planning on having your wedding in the winter. It can get pretty cold in the UK at that time.
Good luck!!! Mine is tonight!! I'm so excited!!!

Hey, my friends got married a few weeks ago. They don't have a lot of money, but the wedding was amazing! They live in Edinburgh (as do I) and they had a small ceremony on Arthurs Seat (large hill, park area) in a 15th century ruined chapel. They got details of how to use it from the council, so maybe your council could help you out with something similar. They hired a minibus and got a friend to drive it to take the guests to a town-hall in Portobello which is a sea-side area in Edinburgh where the reception guests were turning up. The town hall already had tables and seats etc. They had set up a bar but the great thing was they'd bought all the booze themselves from Costo (so it didn't cost much) and then everything was just £2 to buy - brilliant considering how expensive hotel bars can be. Then there was the speeches etc (short and sweet) and afterwards, the buffet was opened and everyone could help themselves. Also, they had the kids write and perform their own play so that no one was left feeling left out.
Oh, also, they did the invitations themselves.
What was great was that the whole day wasn't about a wedding, it was about Joe and Sam celebrating their love for each other and their two wee boys!
Oh, in regards to the chapel they used, becasue it's abandoned, they didn't have to worry about a religious ceremony which was good as they're not religious people. They had a Humanitarian wedding (i think it was called that anyway). Hope this helps!
ps. I think getting married next to a waterfall would be amazing!

Trunk Sales!!! Trunk sales are a girl's best friend! Right now there are plenty of them, so call your local bridal parlours and ask when/if they will be having trunk sales. Trunk sales take normal high expensive dresses and sell them for practically nothing! So call around. Also, if you are planning on having a reception - you could do what my husband and I did. We had a classy, fairly traditional wedding that was really fun for us and our guests. For food we had a baked potato bar. Best thing ever! Everyone said they loved the idea, enjoyed the food, and best of all - it was sooo cheap to do. I think in the end it was about 30 cents per person. And we had over 250 people at our wedding. Also, for our wedding invitations (which can be ridiculously expensive) -- we just took a really nice picture of the 2 of us (taken by our friend who is a pro photographer) and then glued a piece of cardstock to the back of the photograph that had all of our wedding details on it. PEOPLE LOVED THEM! Just remember that your day is exactly that -- your day. Have fun and don't stress. Best wishes to you both.

I am trying to sort out my wedding to it hard to do anything cheap now but I'm trying. We are getting married in a reg office which I wasn't wanting to do but they have been so helpful. We can have what ever flowers we wish (they sort those out) so we save money there. We can have whatever music we like if they haven't got it we can bring our own. We can do it as traditional as we want. Go and see them and have a chat x
After that we are going to a village pub and they are doing a three course meal for £15 a head.
Then a night time party at our local working mans club which is £60 with late bar. And at the mo I'm trying to hire a marquee company to line it and make it look fab.
We are hiring the men's suit's from Burton's which are costing £60 each (for suit, shirt, tie, hanky, cuff links, waistcoat and shoes)
You can do things just as good with little money and a open mind good luck x

Get married mid-week, most places will be discounted.
Hire a hall - we are having our reception in a village hall which will look lovely once decorated.
Book your food through a local college or university - MUCH cheaper than caterers.
Choose flowers in season - also works out cheaper.
Don't use a wedding car, book something different and quirky which can be used for more than the bride and groom

Some churches don't require payment, but it is respectful to donate a little cash to their building fund. Also, if the weather is nice, it is relatively cheap to rent out a public park, or city hall.
Do the smart thing....elope and come back and throw a nice party at a hotel banquet room. It's cheaper and you can spend more on alcohol and have as many people as you like. I wasted too much on decorations at my ceremony! lol

If you go to http://www.confetti.co.uk you can search for venues in your area - it's quite useful. You have to get married somewhere that's licenced, and in England you can't actually get married outdoors, the venue has to have walls and a roof believe it or not!
Other ideas for saving money:
Make your own invitations, or get them from www.bonusprint.co.uk or www.vistaprint.co.uk - much cheaper than from places like Confetti or Debenhams
Get a talented friend to do your flowers
Make your own tiara if you want one (contact me if you want to and don't know where to start) and your own jewellery
All that and our wedding is still costing a fortune though!

You can get married anywhere nowadays but the venue must have a license this is where it will cost I'm afraid as there are all the extra costs involved in getting it passed and then getting the registrar to your venue. You will need to check on costs with your local council.

I'm not sure how they do it in the UK, but if you are married before a Justice of the Peace, or Magistrate, here, they will come where ever you want them. Even your own garden.
When we got married, our biggest expense was the rings. We married before the Magistrate, and had our "reception" at a local restaurant. After all was said and done, we had spent around $1,000 US.
