If the fireplace eally is HUGE, your decorations will have to be large as well. Because stone is natural, work with the seasons. Autumn is a wonderful time for leafs and gourds, pumpkins and the like. Winter comes with many themes, it's not all just Santa, try decorating with a collection of snowmen, small decorated sleds, snowflakes and don't forget the beautiful winter greens and berries. Spring is the birth of a new year, perfect for flowers to perk up a room after two seasons with no growth. And summer, why not try seashells, and or photo's of family vacations. I have a collection of crystal candleholders I've collected from yard sales, they're great to add some color at anytime of the year. I hope I was able to help.

Since you have a rock fireplace, how about putting artificial ivy or leaves on the mantel then add a couple of birdhouses. Attach a couple of artificial birds on the perch or roof by using a little hot glue. You could add clear mini lights through the ivy/leaves. You don't need a holiday to use the mini lights. Just a thought--I wish I had a fireplace with a mantle.

At this time of day I would do a dessert buffet. Fruit and cheese trays are easy to make. Have a tiered plate stand covered in different types of cookies. Make chocolate covered strawberries-great presentation. Sam's has all kinds of specialty desserts. If you need to create a mealtime situation, I'd still do fruit and cheese trays on a buffet along with: 1. Sam's spiral cut ham is good. Better if you can spring for a Honey Baked. 2. A potato or pasta dish: potaotoes augratin or pasta salad 3. Salad: Caesar - easy; Spinach with italian dressing, mushrooms, grape tomatoes, sliced boiled egg, and sliced purple onion 4. Breads or rolls or both, butter 5. A Vegetable- Broccoli with cheese sauce, green bean casserole, cooked carrots glazed with butter and brown sugar, or some family favorite. I'd do 2 veggies Forget appetizers. It's too late in the day. Hire an older teenager to attend the food. Remember the WAY THE FOOD IS PRESENTED WILL MAKE MORE OF AN IMPRESSION THAN THE ACTUAL FOOD ITSELF. Make the food tables beautiful and people will be praising your genius. Good Luck!

That rock fireplace limits your choices to a rustic look, you can pick out the predominant color (grey or brown or cream) and use a pair of heavier weight candlesticks both to one side, a Largeish squared mirror in the same finish as the candlesticks and several framed photos perched on different levels on a small pile of small leather books. I do a lot of shopping at Marshalls, Kirkland, TJMaxx and Home Goods, all places where you can get great CHEAP home acessories.

The decorating of a mantle can give a room focus.
But as far as what to use, really depends of what the rest of the room looks like.
Don't just throw someone Else's ideas on it, look at your home and the way you've furnished it.
Then, whats appropriate????
It could be a mix of photos, knick knacks, old bottles , candles, Anything that will make the focus zing.
You could use more seasonal themes, and change them often.

Maybe some cheap lanterns across the top. You know the ones that you can put the tea lights in. It will look romantic at night.
