I am in the UK and there is a current radio debate talking about bad manners.I was always told how to hold a knife and fork correctly, not to leave until everyone had finished and generally how to conduct myself. Do you think this is getting more rare? I think it's the sad truth that it is. Do you have any examples?

Sadly I have to agree with you. It is a great pity, because good manners can make such a difference to the way you perceive others and are perceived by them. In to-days `world we all seem to be in such a hurry to `get on` or to`get out`, we want to race through life, with no time for the little pleasantries in life.I am afraid we spend less and less time conversing with each other and being with each other. Good manners are used because we care about the feelings and needs of others. That they are disappearing is a sad reflection on our society.

I think that SOME younger people are not being brought up in the way in which we were brought up so there is a noticeable decline in good manners. I still think that there are many well-mannered people in the UK and that we are among the politest people in the world. I just wish that those who come to live here would adopt our style of manners and learn to do such things as queue for buses.

Not just there, here in the US manners are almost forgotten. When one of my boys holds the door for someone, they are totally shocked. People everywhere seem to have decided manners are too 'old fashioned' and not worth the effort. It is sad.

Yes, I was brought up the same, we were always polite, but nowadays no-one seems to take the time to teach manners to their kids.

To pass as mannerly, a person only has to be as well mannered as the most well mannered person present. So my answer is yes in your case, and no in mine!
