Its an M-60. The Marine Corps used them up until just a few years ago, maybe 1996, or so. It is a .308, or 7.62 MM caliber weapon. It was replaced by the 240 Golf.

This is from the actual script of Full Metal Jacket...you can find it on the link I post!

'Animal Mother rushes in with his M-60,
spraying wildly. Most of the NVA inside are dead.
There are some short, sharp exchanges of
automatic fire and grenades with the few remaining NVA die-hards who are all killed.'

It's called the M60. It's classified as a General Purpose Machine Gun. It was meant to replace light and medium machine guns in the U.S. inventory. So to answer your question it replaced the BAR and the M1919 machine gun.

Sickle cell anemia is a harmful condition that is predominant in African-Americans. Because Animal Mother was racist, he was thanking God for sickle cell anemia affecting the life of black people. Saying that was expressing his hate toward the african american soldier. Also, with sickle cell anemia, one cannot enlist, keeping more black people out of the armed services.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think he was armed with an M-60 light machine gun, caliber 7.62mm NATO.
