I like to believe the family and friends of mine who have died are somewhere good. In heaven or someplace. But who knows for sure.

Body is dead and it is not sleeping.Soul ,due to which it was alive , has already left that body,When the soul leave the body, the body is said to have died. Soul does not remain with the dead body and generally the soul take birth in some other body when the other body is about 6 months old in the womb of some new mother. All the souls go on taking births again and again ie. reincarnation. Souls never die, it is the body which dies. There may be questions regarding total number of souls, about the supreme soul, relation of the souls with the supreme soul, what is the actual abode all ,souls are the actors of this world drama, law of reincarnation and cycle of world drama etc. May I propose to take a basic course of 7 free lessons in any of the 7000 centresof the Brahmakumaris Godly University.

Everyone is being treated in grave according to one's doings in this world. They are in a sensible state in the grave. They feel pain and happiness.
Yes souls leave the body with the angel of death but are returned in the grave in order to be interrogated.
Souls are taken out of body and retuned to the body when one reached the grave, body may be rotten by the time but soule remain in the state of punishment or happiness.
This is what we muslims believe.
Please ask an islamic scholar to get it confirmed.

Aisha,

I believe that we remain in the ground with no knowledge of our existence. Upon resurrection day God will raise all the dead out of the graves to face judgment. I do not believe in a burning hell. I believe that hell is the grave based on the original Hebrew and Greek words Sheol and Hades. Jesus said that no man has ascended unto Heaven, and David said that he knew that God wouldn't leave him in the grave for ever. Paul said that our hope is in the Resurrection. I also don't believe anyone goes to Heaven. Those that are given eternal life shall inherit the new Earth. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that people go to Heaven. Heaven and Hell are Greek and Roman teachings that religions still cling to.

I should mention that I am a Christian that follows the beliefs of the original Christians not the corrupted false pagan beliefs of todays churches.

After death the soul departs with the spirit from the body.
But in the Resurrection the soul and spirit will receive a resurrected body like Jesus. Those without Jesus will not be very
happy campers. I know from your profile you have embraced Islam and that is your perfect right. But you may want to consider reading the Bible sometime.

Revelation 21:10-27 "10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life."

My religion teaches me that the soul stays with the body until the day of judgement, but I hope they have some comfort - and what about people whose bodies are completely destroyed? Do their souls stay with the ashes or dust? Honestly, I find it a bit frightening to think of a long wait in the grave until the day of judgement. I wonder if they are aware of the world and the passage of time while they wait. As I understand it, the righteous ones will have angels to comfort them during their wait.

I think the body after death is an empty vessel with no further purpose or significance. It served the soul during life as a means of experiencing karma and free will on the material plane but after death the soul moves onto higher realms of spiritual being.

The theory I like best is the one where your soul keeps coming back until you get it right. Maybe that's why we have people on so many different levels of life.....from the Jerry Springer kind to the Nobel Award winning kind. In which case the body in just a temporary "home" for your soul.

in normal circumstances, the soul leaves the body, and moves on to the rest of the process.

if the person is vain and/or cannot accept their death (this is an extremely bad thing) then they stay in the body, fully aware as their corpse rots... until they let go and move on, as they should have to begin with, or they de-exist.

the "rest of the process" is passing through Gahenna, imagine this as being set in a room, with a book of all your un-accounted for sins and wrongdoings, and you have to review them, one at a time... repenting and attempting to learn from them, once that is completed, you can move on, and take a break, rest, whatever, then plan out the main events and timing for your next life, and when the timing is right, you go off and incarnate. and the cycle goes on.

My thoughts regarding my father the day he died.
I let everyone say goodbye. He was in a state where his body was not able to respond to those around him. His lungs were grasping for every bit of energy giving oxygen they could.
When he left us, I feel he left his body. I did not hug his body. It felt cold and it wasn't, at that point, my daddy anymore. The clothes I gathered out of his hospital closet were not his anymore...he was not there.
His flesh and blood were abandoned. Now, I can honestly say and feel today, ten years later he is with me.
