RE:
what is the difference between Point of sale and Point of Purchase?

Point of sale: Point where someone actually transfers money for a goods or service... Activity for POS will centre around reminding people of something they may have forgotten

Point of Purchase: Point where an individual actually decides to buy somehting... Activity for POP will persuade someone to make a decision between a number of products

It isn't a big difference and most people use POP and POS as the same thing - but the difference is key in certain categories e.g. Difference between a supermarket kiosk and the checkout

POS by definition is Point of sale (POS) or checkout is the location where a transaction occurs. POP by definition is of or relating to the place (as a supermarket aisle) where a decision to purchase is made. So not all that much. You can look at it this way as well. POS can be about the sellers end and POP can be for the consumer. POP have displays that urge consumers to get their product there and now, like an impulse purchase. As for links you can view the sources.
