I was about to say Japan then I remembered Australia was along side of us as they had a lot to lose. I don't think America ever went to war when there wasn't another country involved or had alot at stake. We may have not won a war on our own but then again we didn't start a war on our own either. Even in VietNam the French were fighting first along side South Vietnamese who requested our help. Which doesn't count because there was nothing won. Since America never went anywhere where they weren't protecting someones freedom, they have never been alone.

Your mate is about half right as to the American Revolution. America was America because it declared it's independence prior to the war. The colonists, the Americans, had help from the French and Germans against the British.

War on their own? A couple of people have already listed the Spanish/American War and the thankfully failed attempt to capture Canada in the war of 1812.

The Mexican-American War.

The Indian Wars. Granted it became a war attrition but we defeated the Nations and by the ancient right of war the land became ours.

The Spanish-American War.

The Two world wars we bailed out Europe. WWI ended a year after the US entered the war while it drug on for three years without the US. England was in bad shape without the US in WWII (England did an amazing job holding out, though).

Korea is when the politicians really started screwing up how we fight wars and when we first trusted the vikings, I mean the UN.

Viet Nam we didn't fight to win.

We tried the multinational because that is what the liberals wanted for the 1st Gulf War (Should have finished it then)

This war if we aren't careful we are going to talk ourselves into loosing it.

I'm pretty sure the only wars we've ever fought without any other nation throwing a punch or two would be against the Native Americans and the Mexicans. So, by historical fact, we haven't won many on our own. Doesn't make us less powerful or capable.

Well technically America won both of those wars as they were the only ones left standing when the smoke cleared and they were the ones who got to write the history of those wars but by your friend's definition no America hasn't. And really just about no nation has won or for that matter lost a war without the assistance of at least some Mercenary aid. America has been the driving force typically the ender of just about every conflict it's invovled itself in. But I'd really rather be judged by how we make peace.

Does it matter that Americans got aid in most wars they fought? But why would you fight alone when their are others that support your cause?

Consider World War I, the U.S.A. did not want to get envolved in that war, but we came in to assist the Allies nations after some of our ships were sank by the other group of nations. The European nations could not stop that war on thier own and seeked the aid of the U.S.A. In addition, the European nations then caused World War II out of their own greed and irresponsibility.

But here comes something on the American Revolution. That land mass was called the Americas, so therefore all that lived there were Americans. In addition, those people that became Americans did it on their own. So even though you may not consider them Americans before the revolution, they made their lives in the Americas. Thus they should be considered Americans becaused they lived in the Americas.

Good question. But you mate is wrong. We won the Mexican war alone, the Indian wars alone, and when it comes to WW1 & 2, it was Europe that didn't win alone, without our food and miulitary aid then joining in the Germans wouold have probably won. In the case of WW2 our coming over hastened the wars end by at least a year.

We've never had a reason to go to "ground war" on our own. We're not an imperialist country. The only military war we won on our own was the cold war and not a shot was fired.

The closest that we have came to going to ground war on our own was in WWII when Japan hit us. We could have just fought with Japan and kicked their butts alone but that's not the type of people we are. We figured back then that "well if we're going to fight evil we might as well help our friends fight their evil too." (My Grandpa who served in the Navy during WWII)

America generally doesn't fight wars for its' own glory or expansion, it does so because America is a nation of immigrants and as such we have cultural ties to every nation. That is why, historically, America helps others in times of need. We try to be friends with the world. Judge us not by the actions of our government; the true measure of America is in the willingness of her people to send our most precious asset, our sons and daughters, into harms way for the good of others. Like the millions of them who died honoring our commitment to England in WWII. I lost two uncles to the beaches of Normandy and my father carried emotional scars all his life from the things he was forced to do to stop the aggressive actions of Hitlers' Germany, yet he was one of the first in line volunteering to fly food into Berlin during the airlift. This is what America is, not the foolish actions of our current administration.
