For a Plasma TV , say with dimesions of 40 to 43 inches , what is the maximum resolution ( in pixels ) that it can reach ?

Is this maximum resolution limited by the inherent limits of Plasma technology ?

A case example : an X brand 32 inch LCD TV can reach resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels , whereas by comparison, a Plasma TV of 42 inches can only reach resolutions of 1024 x 768 pixels .

Why is this so ?

The only limit to panel size is the cost, theoretically you could make a panel any size you wanted, however the bigger and higher the resolution you want, the more difficult manufacture becomes.

LCDs and Plasmas are made up of millions of pixels, so as you increase the total number in a panel, the chances of there being one or more defective pixels increases, and a manufacturer can't sell panels with lots of non working pixels.

If a manufacturer has to produce a 100 panels to get one 3000x2000px display the cost is going to be very high, so they're not likely to bother until their yields improve.

For plasmas 1024x768px is common computer screen resolution, and there are enough pixels to display a 720p HD picture.

Below 42 inch go for an LCD. You will hear a lot of Urban Myth about both LCD and Plasma. My own personal choice was for a 42inch LG Plasma, which blew all the others away for image quality in my own personal tests. Don't rely on someone elses opinion. Image quality is subjective and down to the individual. Take a DVD to a few shops and sample all of the screens within your budget (LCD and Plasma) All of my friends own Plasma or DLP's above 40 inch and non of them have had any major failures! The only screen with a problem is a 2.5 year old Samsung LCD with dead pixels in the left hand quarter of the screen. They show up as a line of small red, blue or black dots.
