It is called DUCT tape and was originally developed to seal ventilation ducts quickly and easily. Originally ducts had to be soldered or riveted together, but with duct tape, they could be taped together. Even the color should be a tip-off as they were meant to blend with the tin or galvanized air ducts.

I've heard there's actually a brand of duct tape called "Duck" tape.
