Some of the automatic programme updates seem to download ever increasing large files. I was just wondering what happens to files that the programme had downloaded on the last update. Do they automatically get erased if no longer in use?

Some software updates will over write files if that file(s) are part of the update.

Here is the address for a small utility which will scan your pc and allow you to delete rubbish and obsolete files from your hard drive. Its free. http://www.ccleaner.com/

They may be either destroyed or backed up. Some programs will ask you if you want to keep a back up copy of the old file, but if it doesnt then mostlikely it was writen over by the updated program, but I believe most all programs are still somewhere on your hard drive even if you deleted them.

these files remain stored in the c:\windows directory for the un-installation of the downloaded patch. These can be identified by the folders enclosed within "$" symbol e.g. $$
Its safe to delete these folders if you want to free some disk space.

I don't think it's erased ... because usually you can uninstall the updates and go back to the older versions .. I think they are compressed
