Pasties were invented by the tin miners wifes, so that they could send their husbands off to work with wholesome hearty food to get them through the day. The crust was not eaten, it was there purely to hold the pasty while eating. Originally one half would contain the filling we all know and love and the other half would contain fruit preserve for dessert. True Cornish pasties MUST be made in Cornwall as its the Cornish butter, veg, meat, flour and water that make the unique taste. Nothing better than a proper pasty!

It was so the miners of years ago didnt get dirt on the rest of the pasty that they were eating, also many years ago they were split in two part savoury and part sweet

It's not for consumption but used as a "handle" so that miners could eat them with grubby hands. They would then toss a left-over bit over their shoulder for the spirits that lived in the mines.

To make it strong.

Cornish pasties were just wrapped in greaseproof paper and put in the Snappin bag for miners, they had to be strong.

They were made for workers down the tin mines - good crusty bit so you can hold on to it in the dark - sometimes they'd stick a savoury filling in one end and jam in the other - lovely!

To ensure you get suffiecient heartburn after eating it.

On a practical level so the filling doesn't escape I guess!

So people can eat it with dirty hands. You, in theory, eat the filling and leave the crust.
