A new survey suggests people are becoming less superstitious about 'unlucky' Friday the 13th.
The poll of 1,000 adults shows other superstitons are also less of a concern nowadays.
Fewer people now freak out when they break a mirror, walk under a ladder or a black cat walks across their path.
Three out of four questioned for a Surrey theme park said they had no intention of staying off work just because of the date.
Peter Ronchetti, Thorpe Park's general manager, said people were not as easily scared as they used to be.
He added: "October this year happens to be one of the freakiest months. Friday the 13th and Halloween fall within two weeks of each other."
But, for people who are nervous about Friday 13th, today is doubly alarming, according to a German professor.
Heinrich Hemme, of the University of Aachen, points out that the digits in the date - 13/10/2006 - also add up to 13.

Friday 13th was built into our psyche as being an unlucky day because it was the day a Pope, long long ago(!!) decided he had had enough of the Knights Templars and gave orders that a suprise attack on them all over Europe should take place on that Friday which happened to be the 13th. Many Knights refused to swear allegiance to the Roman Catholic Church, and were consequently burned at the stake as heretics. They proclaimed themselves men of God to the very end but said their knowledge of Jesus made it impossible for them to be part of the Roman Catholic Church. They had huge wealth and did lots of charitable work so I dont know whether people said it was unlucky Friday 13th because all the poor Knights died or because now all the money was with the Pope who wasnt as charitable!!

That is the history of the event and I suppose today we are more educated and know a little more about the route of superstition. It doesnt mean we cant enjoy it tho. I dont think there is any significance at all in the 13 steps of Muslim prayer!! And for the previous answerer who couldnt work out the date thing - 1+3+1+2+6 = 13.

I dont have any problems with Friday 13th. The funniest thing is that people are adjusting their behaviours or normal schedules for this date. It is also hilarious when kids actually scream when they see black cats or when adults panick or want to take the day of because of this 'bad luck day'. The badluck might be just a coincidence. Anyway, i love watching the Friday 13th movies, that is the best part of this day. I know the history and all, but everyone is saying, its Friday 13th did you knew that? Etc. Of course i did. It is just a nother normal Friday with a twist.

That is really interesting how today adds up to 13 too!!!

I however do not believe that it is unlucky. I wrote an exam today and the only thing that is going to determine how well I do is how hard I worked...no the date.

It is also a friend of mine's birthday today and just because it so happened to e Friday the 13th does not mean that she will eternally cursed...

I think people have too many distractions to worry about superstitions. Across the board, belief in anything has fallen. We are becoming more secular and materialistic as a society. How in the heck does he get 13 from adding the numerals of 13/10/2006??

My husband passed away on friday 13th. He was such a fun loving man. It was a few years ago now. I am sure he is smiling down on me from heaven. We joked about the date before he left. It was just a coincidence. There is nothing different about that day. I also broke a mirror last week and I won a raffle the day after.

What I'm amazed at is that 25% of the people questioned said they would stay off work because of the date.

Maybe they meant just because it was a Friday

The number of the Devil, 6+6+6 does not equal 13.
What about that?
It's all in the mind.
Just take normal care as you always do.
No need to be scared.

I didn't even realise today was Friday the 13th until you pointed it out.

Now I'll go back to not caring that it is.

People overcoming supersitions and myths is part of the inevitable progress of humanity. It's one of many things that gives me great hope for the future.

Do you want to know the truth?

Because 13 is a number of steps in Muslim's praying. Do your research about this, you'll be clear why you scared of 13.
