Mix a bottle of household hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of dish soap..Use it while it is foaming..Leave it for 5 minutes, then rinse well.. don't mix in metal bowl, and don't try to store leftovers..

Apply the hydrogen peroxide to a small area first to test for color fastness.

Wow, surprised to read that not even the carpet cleaner did the trick.

Anne K..has the right idea. There are two major brands found in most pet stores that are phenomenal in attacking this problem.

1- "Simple Solution" by Bramton

2- "Nature's Miracle" by Pets N People

Both are enzymatic cleaners and will work on any surface water can touch.

The cause of the smell you're having is the ammonia found in urine. Just like with humans, urine can be more pungent for various reasons, typically because of a higher PH level. When you're attempting to rid the scent, you're really trying to remove the ammonia. Products like bleach, Lysol, Fabreeze...etc do not have the active agent to remove the ammonia, just products to cover them. (PS, Products like PineSol just make it worse as its an ammonia based cleaner)

How the above mentioned products work:
Once the liquid is applied to the stain/scent area, the enzymes begin their mission. (Don't go overboard and pour the whole bottle, just saturate the spot and a 2" area around it, dab with a towel to remove excess but do NOT rub into carpet.) As the product begins to dry, the enzymes basically "eat" the ammonia. (Simple Solution also utilizes a bacteria on top of the enzymes. The bacteria activates only after the enzymes perform their job and start to dry out; basically rendering it as a biodegradable product because the bacteria will then die once completely dry)

Occasionally you'll have a tougher problem then most others which will require several treatments; just don't give up hope. If you have to try both, try them; its trial and error. And at this point, I'm sure you'll try anything that can do the trick.

Personally, I've used and recommended Simple Solution for the last 9 years. Of both brands, SS has been the product more of our customers turn to and continue to use. And it doesn't just work on urine smells as its a fantastic stain remover and general cleaner!

You may also want to consider looking into a "pee finder" black light. Bramton does make one, should run about $20+. The benefits of actually knowing where you need to attack rules out having to repeat the soak method on every inch of your carpet.

Good luck!

I use a combination of washing up liquid neat which is designed to break down the biological waste side of the smell and water and an old towel to mop it back up. If possible try to peal back the carpet and remove the underlay underneath as this is probably your problem as the carpet cleaner would not be able to rectify this. Scrub the boards/ floor with the washing up liquid and put a small patch of new underlay or newspaper if really an a small budget.

The problem with most cleaners is they are too harsh and leave a nasty smell for your puppy to remark over to cover. so if he is still in the habit of using the same spot put a puppy training pad there once cleaned and tape it down so he cant move it.

The smell is definitely coming from underneath and that's where you need to start. Its not really the carpets fault so you wont need to replace it yet just fold it back and tackle the problems underneath.

Hope this helps. Michelle :-)

Ask your Vets for Odourfree by Alstoe Animal Health. You have to spray it on like a normal cleaner as soon as the puppy's peed, but it is biological (has enzymes that eat the bacteria and odour). It smells lovely (like parma violets!) and actually prevents the puppy from peeing in the same spot!

We had a Dalmatian puppy that peed everywhere and as soon as we bought this she became much better house-trained and very soon stopped peeing in the house altogether (may have been a coincidence, but at least the carpet didn't stink anymore!). It really is great stuff (and good to keep in because you never know when they might pick up a bug and do worse 'accidents' on your carpet!).

You need an enzyme based cleaner, even so the smell won't completely clear until after the carpet is bone dry!

some smells simply refuse to leave. you will however notice the smell much less when the weather becomes colder. If you cant wait till then rip up the smelly bit of the carpet and replace it with another piece of similar looking carpet. sometimes its best not having any carpet untill the puppy is fully house trained.

Have you tried those enzyme cleaners you actually get from the vet of Pet shop, you sprinklle them on where you smell the little rascal and the enzymes eat it up, then you vacuum. I beleive it works, I have a cat and they stink more than dogs at certain times of the year.

try febreeze or try tuff stuff. you can get tuff stuff at wal-mart in the auto section. you spray it on the use a stiff plastic bristle brush to scrub it in the vacuum it up. it will remove stains in your carpet(home or car). also you may use arm & hammer carpet & room pet fresh spray.
