28 days

Under law a consumer has no right to return goods after the period of acceptance has expired but the law does not state what reasonable period of acceptance might be.
Empirical data and case precedent indicates 28 days as being a fair time for both consumer and trader, but this is a guideline and some shops may set as little as 24 hours. Some say no refunds at all. Traders are not legally bound to offer refunds on unwanted goods and may refuse to do so if the goods are of a personal nature (knickers, toiletries etc).
The return of unwanted goods must be accompanied by a proof of purchase. This is for the easiest a receipt, but a receipt is not always necessary as some tills can process expensive items using a name or address. If you have paid by credit card, you can use the statement as proof, but the holder of the card must claim the refund in person as it has to be signed against.
Unwanted goods must be returned in their original packing, unopened. Some shops will take goods that have been opened but will only offer a partial refund, unless you have been deliberately mis-sold goods that are not suited to the purpose. The trouble lies in proving this.
If goods are faulty within the period of acceptance the trader is normally obliged to replace the goods from stock.
Faulty goods that are outside the period of acceptance but within the manufacturing gaurantee may at the trader's discretion be instantly replaced or sent for repair. If a repair proves uneconomic or impractical, goods must be replaced. A good is considered faulty if it's got a minor defect too, say a scratch or blemish, unless it was pointed out at the time of sale in which case the normal practice is to give a discount for the defect.

This is not of course a statement of law, it's just a general guide to retail law and practices. I used to have to sort this kind of thing out when I worked at Comet, and let me tell you it's a headache sometimes.

Hope that's useful.

In the UK, no shop is obliged to give you a refund unless the item is faulty. However most offer a 28 day return policy. Sometimes with a refund, sometimes an exchange or credit note.

it varies from shop to shop and the item, legally you can return anything broken up to a year after you ought it as long as you have the receipt, usually shops allow you to refund something you dont like for either 28 days or 14 days, though i where i used to work would allow you to refund agter that but instead of getting your money back you got store credit
