I am bi-polar and I take two different medications - one for mood swings (Lamictal) and one to help me sleep (Serequil) and between the two meds I find myself very well balanced, sleeping well and much better than I thought. Talk to your doctor about it and they should be able to help you find ones that work for you.

My husband has bipolar, and he has big problems with sleep,
he is up half the night, he goes to bed at about 2am, but has broken sleep right through the night. He says he just can't turn his mind off, and has to keep getting up to do what it is that has popped into his head at that time. He does have a rest each afternoon for an hour or so.

I'm Bipolar and have had frequent problems sleeping.I'm taking Lithium to stabilize me.I also take 3mg. of klonopin at bed to relax me which has me become dependent on it( not good). My doctor is working on taking me off the klonopin in the near future.Stress seems to be my biggest problem with falling asleep.A little anxiety too.Everyone with Bipolar disorder is different. Not every medicine works for each individual nor does every Doctor seem to be the best fit.First make sure that your doctor has your best interest in mind and is not just wanting to pop you pills.Second if you have a doctor that you find a good fit with be honest with them because it will help you better.Third, know that you are not alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are having trouble with sleeping there are a few suggestions. Do you spens a lot of time at home ? If you are inside all day you are not using much energy and so are less likely to feel tired ,sleepy , at bed time.
The hypomania or elated state can take away your need for sleep but will reult in exhaustion if it continues for too long.
try to get some exercise. if you are not working. go for walks. force yourself to get actibe. walk instead of getting buses.
Go for walks in open spaces like parks or the country to avoid choking on car exhaust fumes when walking beside roads !
Sleep is a crucial factor and has to be controlled. i have problems with sleeping too much at the moment cause i stay up late watching tv and sitting on my P.C. all night and can sleep all day. when i wake i just close my eyes again.
you have to motivate your self to do stuff. having someone to help you is a blessing.it is hard on your own.the best advice is to maintain a regular sleeping pattern. go to bed at your ideal time. do not get up even if you do not feeel sleepy . after A few weeks , you will condition yourself to go to sleep at this time.
If your activity pattern is all over the shop then so will your brain be. your brain is a muscle too. you can train it to work for your advantage. structured routines are best. Get up early in the mornings. walk to your local library. they have all the daily newspapers and you do not have to pay to sit and read them. they have books all about everything. you are surely able to find something of interest ( although i lost my interest in anything and could not read anything when i was really high) i found that i lost interest in everything very quickly when i was high too.
early to bed early to rise. make sure that you exercise ( walknig is exercise !!! )
