I have a digital camera on layway at Wal-Mart. I have over $200, but less than $250 left to pay for it. How should I start out to use it? I mean the weather has been bad due to storms off the coast here. I'm really into photography. My dad taught me when I was about 19 years old, when he gave me a cameraa that photographers use, for Christmas. I had always wanted to be a photgrapher I guess. My co-worker is hiring my to take pictures of his wedding. My dad used to be a photographer for the newspaper for 10 years. He still does it sometimes & he's a professional with what he does. So please help me out.

Start out with the people around you, even if you do not know them.

For general photography, just get out there with your camera and have fun with it. (Storms make for great shots, too.)
For inspiration, go to a bookstore/ library and plow though dozens of photo books. For ideas for wedding shots, just Google for wedding photography, and you'll get a ton of pro photographer sites with great examples.
To brush up your technical skills, read Ansel Adam's books 'the camera' and 'the negative'. They are fairly dry and ancient, but still valid for modern digital photography.
For wedding photography, this site provides some good tips and a checklist for the must-get shots.

Frankly, if you don't have the gear and people + technical skills to compete with pros, I'd do some expectation management with your co-worker and limit any payment to just cover expenses - or make the prints your wedding gift to the couple. If you enjoy the experience and get some great shots out of it, you can always use those pictures as a portfolio for other events.

I'm a big fan of photography that can artisitcally freeze movement... one person standing still on a subway platform while everyone else blurs past... droplets of water floating like perfect spheres all around a large splash... the picture of the grizzly bear standing in a blurry waterfall with his mouth open and a fish frozen mid flight just inches from the bear's mouth (and its impending death)... a series of action shots I took of my girlfriend dancing around on a beach in Oregon.

Take pictures of everything, practice makes perferct or darn near close to perfect. Try to take your camera along with you everywhere you go you never know when you are gonna come across something great to shoot

I have no idea about the camera but I did want to tell you that Walmart is getting rid of their layaway and I think you have to have your stuff out of there by Nov 15? I am not positive of the date but you might want to check it out.

Good luck!

If your dad is still a professional, I'd suggest that you talk to HIM about this, since he can actually see the equipment you have and show you how to use it.
